The handmade model in a bottle is the work of a hobbyist, in about the mid-20th century. The word 'Cork" may indicate the location of the maker. The Pamir was a four-masted barque built for the German shipping company F. Laeisz. One of their famous Flying P-Liners, she was the last commercial sailing ship to round Cape Horn, in 1949. By 1957, she had been outmoded by modern bulk carriers and could not operate at a profit. Her shipping consortium's inability to finance much-needed repairs or to recruit sufficient sail-trained officers caused severe technical difficulties. On 21 September 1957, she was caught in Hurricane Carrie and sank off the Azores, with only six survivors rescued after an extensive search.The model represents the work of an individual as a hobby project in the early to mid-20th century.Ship in bottle. Lucknow Manufacturing Company was located at 103 Brunswick Road, Brunswick in the mid 1930s. In 1937, Lucknow Manufacturing Company was fined for selling methylated spirit which was adulterated (The Age, 19 August, p. 4.) In the early 1940's the company moved to a larger premises in Mount Alexander Road, Flemington, where this particular bottle was produced. Amber bottle with cork stop. The vaginal syringe, also known as a female syringe, was introduced in the early 1900s and was in use until the late 1940s when it was replaced by the glass douche nozzle. (Thackray, 'Midwifery & Gynaecological Instruments, (M)463, p. 264.)Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920. She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. Mrs Howlett's midwifery box and contents were given to Dr Frank Forster, and he donated them to the museum collection in 1993. Vaginal syringe with glass barrel and plunger and a cork bung. Fluid capacity of syringe 60-90 mls. Cotton thread is woven tightly around the end of the plunger. There are five holes in the end of the glass barrel.midwifery -

The flagon with port was issued to recognise the end of the Shire of Bulla Works Depot. The port was from the Mt Aitken Estates in Gisborne. Public Works previously administered by the Shire of Bulla went out to private tendering.A cream and brown glazed flagon with sloping sides. The lower half of the flagon is cream with brown printing. The upper half and neck is brown. There is a black unbroken seal over the cork and the port is still in the flagon.
