The Merle Bush Trefoil Guild was registered in Bendigo on 18/06/1981.The decision to disband the Merle Bush Trefoil Guild was made at a General Meeting on 17/02/2016. The group agreed to continue as the Merle Bush Friendship Group. The Australian Trefoil Guilds connect women who are either actively involved in Girl Guiding or have a history with Girl Guiding. Wiregrass Younger Set Article - Sporting Globe (Melbourne, Vic. : 1922 - 1954)Saturday 17 May 1941 - Page 4 In forwarding a cheque for £10 for the ???, K. McCormick, Hon. Treasurer of the Wiregrass Younger Set of Bendigo, tells of the fine work done by this group. The "set" was formed in 1934 as a charitable and social body by 16 single men (all well known in local sporting circles). Up to the time war broke out they had raised £1200 for local charities. Since then for soldiers' camps and patriotic funds they have gathered more than £400. Of an active membership of 14 at the beginning of war, 10 are now on active service. In Retrospect In mid 1952, a distinguished man arrived in Bendigo and interested several citizens, including Dr. P Goodman, the President of the Musical Advancement Society, in the formation of a Company for the production of Musical Comedy. The meeting was called at the home of Mr Fred Bush, and a group of enthusiasts made the acquaintance of Mr Norman Lee, our producer and sequently the M.A.S. and several leading citizens, sponsored the first production, by subscribing funds for initial expenses. From such humble beginning, our present Society originated. Mr Cyril Cyril Warne was appointed Musical Director, Mrs Phyllis House, Pianist, and Miss Madge Welch, Ballet Mistress. In 1926 a site in Hargreaves Street Bendigo, behind the School of Mines, was purchased to establish the Bendigo Knitting Mills, a subsidiary of Hanro. The managing director was Charles Handerchin who came from Switzerland.
