James R Kean Printer - Percy Street Portland... of General laws 1880 James R Kean Printer - Percy Street Portland ...The Ancient Order of Foresters, which originated in England in the mid 1700s, established its first branch (Court) in Victoria in 1849. Foresters was set up as a non-profit organisation, the founding principles of the Society being to provide financial and social benefits as well as support to members and their families in times of unemployment, sickness, death, disability and old age. The Society is now known as the Foresters Friendly Society and in July 1999 was incorporated as a public company limited by shares and guarantee.Small 6 page pamphlet, outlining alterations of General laws, made at Quarterly Meeting held at Forester's Hall Gawler St Portland on Friday 9th Jan 1880. Ratified on 26 Feb 1880 by John Burstem Gregory. Registrar of Friendly Societies. -

Thomas decided to feed the machine located ...On April 21 1874 Thomas and John Burns who were 11 and 9 were on their way to school. On the way they stopped to play with friends at a bark mill located on Percy Street. Thomas decided to feed the machine located in the mill and after he got distracted both his hands became caught. John went to help his brother and his arm also got caught. A doctor had to perform amputations. This resulted in an outpouring of grief and a huge fundraising effort.Clipping from newspaper attached to white card. Black and white photo of Burns brothers standing in a drawing room, one missing both arms, the other an arm and hand, due to accident at a bark mill on Percy Street. Advertisements found on Trove from November 20 1899 shows the store selling Spring goods, Millinery, Dress goods, prints, piques and muslins. Another advertisement on Trove from September 27 1907 shows the store showing their Spring and Summer Goods, including Choice Millinery, Latest Dress Fabrics, Laces and Silks, Blouses and Skirts.Paper account from J. Campbell, wholesaler and family draper to Mrs Cummings, in the sum of 4/6 for a blouse. Printed form, details handwritten in black ink top right hand corner is missing, and top left hand corner has two holes in the paper. Paper is cream and has darker brownish patches at the top. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view.'
