Portland Higher Elementary School, with an enrolment of 30 students, was established in 1912 as part of the Palmer Street Primary School. Senior education continued on this site until 1945 when Portland High School was finally established with 192 students. By the time new buildings were built in Julia Street in 1957 and ready to move into, there were already 480 students enrolled.
