These letters are from the Shire Office prior to its amalgamation to East Gippsland. They were located directly above the front doors at the front entrance to the building. The Shire coat of arms was on the wall on the right of the front entrance to the building directly above the front doors. The current building was opened on Friday 28th February 1969 by the Premier of Victoria, The Hon. Sir Henry E. Bolte, K.C.M.G., M.P. Originally, Orbost was part of the Bairnsdale Road District which was created on 30 April 1867. Splitting away as part of the Shire of Tambo in 1882, Orbost was first incorporated as a shire in its own right as the Shire of Croajingolong on 30 May 1892. It received its present name on 17 February 1893. On 3 January 1913 part of its western riding was annexed to Tambo as its Cunninghame Riding. On 2 December 1994, the Shire was abolished, and merged with City and Shire of Bairnsdale, Shire of Tambo, most of Shire of Omeo and the Boole Boole Peninsula from Shire of Rosedale into the Shire of East Gippsland. The two-storey house at 104 Peel Street, known locally as The Mousehouse, was built in 1890 of stucco-rendered handmade bricks. The ground floor façade suggests that the front door originally opened directly onto the street. Prior to 1915, the house was numbered 184, but the street number changed to 104 in that year. Early residents included Henry Martin, Mrs Henrietta Blythe and A. R. Chaffer, the two latter being shopkeepers. The eminent dentist Samuel E. Wills, who had rooms in Collins Street, moved to the house in 1897 and lived there for six years. He was reputed to have conducted a dental practice in the cellar. Wills proposed the establishment of a Dental College in Melbourne and helped to frame Victoria’s dental rules and by-laws. Phoebe Rebecca Georgina Colton was born in Williamstow in c1889, the daughter of Henry Culter Colton and Elizabeth Georgina Lucas. This photo was taken on her engagement to Albert George Harbert. They married in 1912 and moved into the house Albert had built at 237 Union Road. The house had cost him £240 to build. During his career he built a number of houses in Surrey Hills. Phoebe had worked as a seamstress prior to marriage, earning 2/6d a week. They had 2 daughters Unice and Norma. Unice remained single. Norma married Henry Jamieson. Albert, the son of William Devereux Harbert and Anna Maria Gooch) was born in 1890. He died 15 June 1971 in Malvern. Phoebe Rebecca Georgina Colton (b 1889, Williamstown; d 31 August 1968), the daughter of Henry Culter Colton and Elizabeth Georgina Lucas. Albert and Phoebe were married in 1912 and moved into the house Albert had built at 237 Union Road. He bought the 60 foot frontage block for £60 in 1912 and built the home for £240. Albert built a number of homes in the locality and the shelter sheds at Chatham School. Phoebe had worked as a seamstress prior to marriage, earning 2/6d a week. They had 2 daughters Unice and Norma. Unice remained single. Norma married Henry Jamieson. They both lived to a good age and continued to live locally until frailty in old age caused them to move to nursing homes.
