The property was owned by the Commonwealth of Australia, managed by the Department of Defence, and occupied by the Army Survey Corps. The site was originally part of the Ravenswood or Mount Alexander squatting run, licensed in 1840. The evolution of mining technology and the formation of mining companies played a significant role in the area's development. Fortuna is recognized for its historical, architectural, and environmental value, with conservation efforts focused on the estate as it existed around 1907 under the Lansells' ownership.
