The student is wearing the full navy blue uniform including cap and a cash bag while holding a ticket punch in his left hand. The instructor has a WW2 returned serviceman's badge on his left lapel. 2 - Group photo of student conductors sitting at tables covered with papers and books The conductor training school was located at Hawthorn Depot for many decades before and after WWII. However, for a short period around 1969-71, it was relocated to the old Gertrude Street, Fitzroy Engine House along with a retired W2 class tram body for the student conductors' use. During the 1960s and 1970s, many students conductors were male university students on summer holidays filling vacancies that could not be filled by full-time recruits. The young age and nationality of the male students pictured suggests they were a university students. The conductor training process took eight day. Prior to the first day, the student attended the uniform branch at Hawthorn Depot to be fitted with the uniform of cap, jacket, trousers or skirt for women, two shirts and tie. Overcoats were not provided to university students. The first day was spent in the classroom in full uniform with instruction on ticketing, forms, rules, duties on a tramcar and safety procedures. Practice of these tasks occurred in the classroom, then on a stationary tramcar 'selling' tickets to fellow students and learning the bells, handbrake, destination signs, etc. The next six days were spent working on trams at the assigned depot under the instruction of a trainer-conductor, while various officers rode the trams to observe and write reports. The final day was spent at the training school for oral and written examinations, then allocation to a depot as a probationer conductor for 13 weeks. A man who retired yesterday after almost half a century connected with the Bendigo's trams, recalled the time when a policeman had to travel on the last tram to Eaglehawk to maintain order. He was Mr Evans, began in 1910 as a conductor, became a motorman, then traffic inspector, appointed tramways superintendent in May, 1928. When he retires he will be in his 48th year of service.. Received callers wishing him well in his retirement, was besieged with telephone calls and telegrams in his office the S.E.C. buildings, received a presentation of a framed photograph of himself at work from the tramway inspectors and a presentation from the staff and employees. Complimentary dinner at the Hotel Shamrock. Wages for conductors in 1910, 1 pound 2/6 for 60 hours, Motormen received 1 pound 10. No windscreen in trams. No sick pay.Tram drivers had to attend broken trolley wires, repairs or replacements in controllers and general equipment, to rerail trams when derailed, adjust brakes. Welsh, Cornish and Irish miners often sang on the trams. Policemen had to travel on the last tram at night to maintain order. Tram ticket obtained from conductors. 'Passengers could travel between Eaglehawk and Quarry Hill, a distance of almost 11 miles, at a charge of sixpence return,' said Mr Evans. Combination tickets included return tram fares and admission to the theatre. Photograph of seven male staff and three female staff standing with heads bowed with the likelihood of further men and women out of shot. The senior male at left is Tramways Board Chairman, Retired Major General Robert Risson (knighted in 1970). The location is likely a locker room in the M&MTB Head Office, Little Collins Street where Honour Rolls of staff who had died during war were fixed to walls above the lockers. A clock shows 11am, presumably on 11 November sometime in the 1960s, recalling the cesation of World War One. At this exact time each year across the tram network all tramcars were halted in the streets by order of the Board as a mark of respect. Photograph shows cable saloon car number 290 with undercarriage among vegetation in a suburban house backyard. There is a pergola nearby and the house has a tiled roof. This is the backyard of cable tram enthusiast and historian, Alf Twentyman, who bought the retired trailer car in 1929 and placed it behind his house as a sewing room for his wife and a playroom for their children. Over the years he purchased more cable trams, storing them in his backyard, repairing and painting them and loaning them for exhibitions. Alf’s tramway knowledge and preservation work have contributed much to today’s understanding of Melbourne's earliest tramway network. Alf's grandfather, architect Edward Twentyman, designed the cable tram company's head office at 673 Bourke Street, Melbourne and many cable tram buildings. The photo shows a large group of men in formal attire at the Annual Dinner of cable tram employees at the Masonic Temple Hall in Collins St on 8/12/1925 - on a Tuesday. The caption points out in particular Mr Eric Hobday, and that it was the largest gathering of cable tram employees at the time. The line to Black Rock was closed on 5-11-1956. A VR bus is waiting at the kerb. Advised by the Bus & Coach Society of Victoria - It is one of four 1946 Martin & King bodied White WA18 buses for the VRMS, which were ordered to restart the Beach Road service after the war, on 13/5/46. The service had been suspended during the war years. Three of the Whites had a single door, numbers 127, 128 and 129 and the fourth. number 130, had a rear door – although given their rather short length, one can only wonder why. Just why they were built so short is another mystery. They were packed on most services, which double heading common. The one in the photo is number 127, initially registered HB492 and then reregistered ( as seen) as V1478. All of them were retired in 1957 to be works buses for the VR. One of them still exists somewhere but well beyond redemption in the photo that has been seen.Yields information about the VR tram terminus at Sandringham station during September 1956. DEATH OF MR. H. NEWMAN. Widespread regret will be felt at the announcement of the death of Mr Henry Newman, an old colonist and a member of firm of Newman and Sons Proprietary Limited, jewellers, which occurred at his residence, "Sadova," William street, on Saturday, at the age of 89 years. Mr Newman who was born at Riga, in Russia, went to England when a lad, became naturalised, and emigrated to Victoria 61 years ago. He tried his fortune at Ballarat but soon afterwards returned to Melbourne, and began business as a jeweller, on a site in Collins street that is now occupied by Scott's Hotel. A few years later Mr Newman went back to England, where he was married. On his return to Victoria again he resumed his jewellery business in Elizabeth street opposite the General Post-office. An interesting fact in connection with his business is that his first journeyman watchmaker was Mr. Thomas Gaunt, the founder of the firm of Messrs. T. Gaunt & Co. Five years ago Mr. Newman retired from the business, which has since been carried on by his two elder sons. Although he took no active part in public affairs, Mr Newman was held in high regard on account of his business integrity, sterling personal worth. and the unostentatious way in which he did good. His vitality, even in his later years, was wonderful. On four occasions he met with accidents, having been twice knocked down by motorcars and twice by trams, without having sustained injury. A widow and grown up family of four sons and four daughters survive him. The Age Monday 27 October 1913, page 9. Roy Cronin 156 High Street Kew Jeweller and watchmaker. A small label on the interior records the name R. Cronin, 156 High St, Kew, 1/7/20. It is unclear whether Cronin, a watchmaker and jeweller may have repaired or sold the clock.
