Sandhurst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival. The aim of The Bendigo Easter Festival is to increase awareness of, and attendance at the Bendigo Easter Festival amongst regional, intrastate, and interstate audiences by 2006. Bendigo Easter Festival - Australia's oldest festival ... .... .. Gold, gold, gold. The year of 1871 was a great year for Bendigo. Parks were laid out, trees lined the streets. Although acknowledged as starting in 1869 the Easter Festival was considered an annual event by 1871. Under brilliant illumination the whole of the Camp Reserve (now Rosalind Park) was filled with a bewildering variety of groups, exhibits and individuals all eager to be involved in such a worthwhile cause. There were sports meetings, theatricals, bazaars and instrumental items as well as dancing and carnival rides. On Easter Monday, as it is today, there was a grand procession that included a variety of bands. 1871 also marked the first year that the Chinese joined in the festivities. Originally the Chinese participated in the procession by dressing in richly embroidered costumes, and carrying colourful banners in all shapes and sizes, which were specially made for them in China. In 1889, the Chinese were given their traditional place in the Parade, the end. They created a wonderful spectacle with their colourful costumes, banners and flags, and in 1892, Loong, the dragon appeared. The Bendigo Easter Festival had been fortunate in that it bad such a lively Chinese community in its midst. At the time of course, Bendigo was known as Sandhurst, and it was not until twenty years after the first Easter Festival that the town was known as Bendigo. These days with sponsorship from the Sandburst Trustees, the Festival is known as the Sandhurst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival. 132 years later, the Sandburst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival has had many changes. But loyal followers have never been disappointed. This year people saw the traditions upheld with family entertainments and not Loong, but Sun Loong, meaning new dragon, a 100m long Imperial Dragon who was created to take the place of the aging Loong. George Victor Lansell was Born in London in 1883, eldest son of George Lansell ('Quartz King') and Edith. Educated at St Andrew's College, Bendigo, and Melbourne Grammar. Married Edith, a skiing champion, in 1910; honeymooned overseas and visited Egypt. Named his Bendigo home 'Denderah' after an Egyptian archaeological site. The house featured art nouveau architecture and a Widow's Walk for astronomy. Commissioned in the 8th Australian Infantry Regiment in 1904; captain by 1909. He served in France during World War I with the 38th Battalion; wounded but returned to service. George organized the northwest Victorian Volunteer Defence Corps in WWII; retired as honorary colonel in 1942. Served as a Nationalist Party member for Bendigo in the Legislative Council, later joined the Country Party.President of the Bendigo branch of the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia for nearly 30 years. Led fundraising for the Soldiers' Memorial Hall and its brass honour rolls. Director of several local companies, including Sandhurst Trustees Co. and Bendigo Mutual Permanent Land and Building Society. Introduced Hanro Knitting Mills and the Australian Swiss Watch Co. to Bendigo.Acquired and merged the Bendigo Independent with The Bendigo Advertiser. Built a clinic at Bendigo Hospital with his mother; donated medical equipment and supported local institutions like the Benevolent Home, art gallery, School of Mines, and YMCA.Recognition and Legacy. Coolock House, on the corner of View and Valentine Streets in Bendigo has a rich history marked by notable ownership and varied uses. Acquired in 1908 by George Victor Lansell, son of Bendigo's famous "Quartz King" George Lansell, as a home for himself and his bride, Edith Florence Gwendoline (Gwen) Frew. The couple named the house "Denderah" after a village and temple in Egypt they visited on their honeymoon. After Sir George's death in January 1959, the property was auctioned and renamed "Coolock House." It Served as a convent for the Sisters of Mercy and as a venue for meetings. The original "Coolock House" name is also associated with a Sisters of Mercy house outside Dublin. Currently, Coolock House is used as classrooms for Catholic College students in Bendigo. The building retains elegant historical features such as hand-carved mahogany fireplaces, leadlight and stained glass windows, wrought ironwork, and a sweeping mahogany staircase. A notable anecdote is that Lady Lansell would watch guests arrive from a small bay window at the top of the staircase. Copy of a piece about Richard Hartley Smith Abbott. Abbott was born in Bendigo. He was a hardware merchant, it operated as Abbot Supply Co. He was a director of the Bendigo gas Co, Sandhurst Building Society and Sandhurst Trustees Co. He also helped pioneer tanning in Australia and he had his tannery in Mandurang. He served on the Strathfieldsaye Council and later the Bendigo City Council. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1907 and in 1932 served as a Senator. In 1887 he was on the committee to establish an art gallery. He served on the School of Mines Council. In 1910, he attended a meeting about Miners' Phthisis in Bendigo. He invested in the Bendigo mines and his firm was a major supplier of various hardware for the mining companies. Margaret Jane Kelly wife of Michael Kelly died 25.8.1912. bd. 28.8.1912. Daughter Rita bd. 21.1.1898 Son Roy (Robert Dennis) Kelly died 22.9.1943 bd. 23.9.1943. Daughter Doris May Kelly bd. 19.1.1967 Daughter Madge Annie Kelly bd. 6.6.1963. No records found of a marriage for Roy, Doris or Madge. Michael P. Kelly was born in Galway, Ireland and died in 1929 aged 76. He had been in Victoria for 59 years. For 50 years he had been closely associated with Bendigo mining companies, and was a leading investor. He joined the Bendigo Stock Exchange in 1880, had been chairman of the exchange multiple times.
