An information flyer that was produced as a guide to the Cumberland Scenic Reserve by the Forests Commission of Victoria. The Forests Commission Victoria (FCV) was the main government authority responsible for management and protection of State forests in Victoria, Australia between 1918 and 1983. The Commission was responsible for ″forest policy, prevention and suppression of bushfires, issuing leases and licences, planting and thinning of forests, the development of plantations, reforestation, nurseries, forestry education, the development of commercial timber harvesting and marketing of produce, building and maintaining forest roads, provision of recreation facilities, protection of water, soils and wildlife, forest research and making recommendations on the acquisition or alienation of land for forest purposes″. The Cumberland Scenic Reserve is set in the heart of the mountain forests of Victoria and is 16km east of Marysville on the Cumberland Road. This reserve forms part of the catchment of Armstrong Creek, a tributary of the Yarra River which provides water for the Melbourne area. This booklet has been produced to advertise the tours offered by the Gibson’s Bus Services in Warrnambool in the late 1930s or early 1940s. The office of this bus service was situated in the Commercial Bank Buildings in Koroit Street, Warrnambool. This booklet is of interest because it shows the type of bus tours offered to Warrnambool people in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The tours were to Canberra and Sydney, Mount Gambier, Adelaide, Geelong, Ballarat, the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians. The buses could take 11 to 20 passengers. This is a soft cover booklet of eight pages produced as an advertising feature for Gibson’s Bus Services of Warrnambool. The cover has a yellow background with green lines on the edges. There is a sepia-coloured photograph on the front cover of a river scene encased in the shape of a bus and the back cover has three photographs of the buses used by the company. The pages have information on Gibson’s Scenic Tours, Gibson’s Travel Club and the extended and day tours offered by the company. The booklet includes many black and white photographs of places visited on the tours. A wide range of small china pieces carrying scenic views of holiday destinations or key locations were a popular kind of souvenir during much of the 20th century. Several different pieces were used to depict Wodonga during this period, primarily focusing on the Woodland Grove and the Soldier Memorial. In 1924, Arthur Arnold and his father Wilhelm Arnold had established a general store in High Street, near the water tower, but in 1931–32 they moved to new premises in High Street on the corner of what is now known as Elgin Boulevard. In 1933-34 they widened the frontage of the shop and added new premises at the rear for the sale of produce. As customer debt mounted during the depression, it became difficult for Arthur and Wilhelm to re-stock the shop, so they enticed customers into paying their accounts by rewarding them with a small individual cream or milk jug upon payment. The jugs were made in Czechoslovakia and displayed the war memorial, water tower and bandstand from Woodland Grove, Wodonga. The Arnolds continued to trade until they finally closed their store in 1950. Wilhelm Arnold was a brother of J G Arnold, whose business ultimately became the present-day Arnold’s Fruit Market, Wodonga. This item has local historic and social significance as it depicts which features of the city the community valued in the past.
