Daughter of George Temple and Mary McAuslane of Castlemaine, Hilda married James Kerr in 1893 and lived at Lincluden, Raymond Street, Orbost. Her husband was a Scot who had come to Australia as a ship's doctor and practised in NSW before visiting Orbost on a government vaccination programme. He liked Orbost and returned there, its first doctor, until his death in 1928. Hilda was sometimes referred to as 'Mrs Dr Kerr.' She and her sisters Mabel Stewart Temple and Margaret Ferrie Temple were all talented writers and musicians.This booklet is an example of the talent of Hilda Temple Kerr. Hilda Temple Kerr (1874-1956) grew up in Orbost. She was very talented and published several books. It is reflective of the style of poetry in the early 19th century.A small book with a cream coloured cover. It is titled Nell - A Story of the Sea and contains poetry, a libretto written by Hilda E. This music stand belonged to Eva Veronica Gaspar. Miss Gaspar (1913 -1978) was one of Warrnambool's most notable musicians and photographers. She gave free music lessons to Warrnambool and district children, organised choral festivals and ran a printing business. She was a life member of the Warrnambool Music Society and organized the Mozart Music Festival for many years. She was a Warrnambool Citizen of the Year 1956 and was awarded a British Empire Medal in 1972 for her services to music. She also conducted the Warrnambool Civic Orchestra, St. Joseph's church choir, junior choirs and recorder groups. In 1977 she held an exhibition at the Warrnambool Art Gallery of her photographs, drawings and monochromes. This music stand was used by Eva Gaspar mainly in Mozart Hall in Gilles Street. This stand is of interest as a memento of the work of Eva Gaspar an important musician in Warrnambool in the twentieth century.This is a wooden music stand with a circular base on four feet. The base has an outer ridge with a shallow indent and a domed top into which the pedestal is attached. The pedestal has decorative features . The ledge at the top is rectangular shaped with a projecting curved edge at the base. The top has a compartment for holding music and/or notes. The pedestal is attached to the top tray with a circular brace and metal screws. The whole item has been varnished but is stained and rubbed. This is the original manuscript for the song ‘Back to Warrnambool’, composed for the ‘Back To’ celebrations in Warrnambool in 1930 and reprinted for the ‘Back To’ celebrations in 1934. The song, described as a ‘souvenir foxtrot’ was written by Reginald Stoneham, a professional musician who was engaged to write the song. Reginald Stoneham (1879-1942) was a composer who was Australia’s leading exponent of jazz and ragtime piano styles in the first decades of the 20th century. He composed many tunes for anniversaries and celebrations in country towns and cities in Victoria. The original ‘Back to Warrnambool’ music was given to Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool in 1930 and handed over to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society by Keith Arnel, the Town Clerk in 1973. Note that the original song was ‘Respectfully dedicated to the Pioneers of Warrnambool’. This dedication, for some reason, was not printed on the music issued in the ‘Back To’ programs of either 1930 or 1934. This is a significant item as the song ‘Back to Warrnambool’ has great historical significance as it was popular in Warrnambool in the 1930s and 40s and is still played and sung occasionally today. It is one of the two local songs about Warrnambool composed by Reginald Stoneham. The other is the Warrnambool Waltz Song. It is of interest to historians and researchers to have the original music.This is the original handwritten manuscript of the song, ‘Back to Warrnambool’. There are two pages of pre-ruled music score papers, filled in on both sides of the paper. The paper is marked ‘Boomerang Brand No2’. The musical notes and the words of the song are in black ink. The name of the song is outlined in red ink. The Royal Archer Hotel in Koroit Street between Kepler and Liebig Streets was opened in 1894 and closed in 1969. Frederick Viney was the licensee from 1894 to 1910. This label comes from the business of Howard Sleath. He was a 20th century violin and viola maker and repairer from Queensland. The label is probably part of the memorabilia of Edith Jacobs (nee Larwill) who was a 20th century Queensland violinist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra before her marriage and change of residence to Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has some of Edith Jacobs’ violin strings and the label may have come with them. This label is retained for display purposes and possibly as a memento of a local Warrnambool musician, Edith Jacobs. In 1938, Arthur William Glass (known as Peter Glass) was studying painting under Max Meldrum. Much of their inspiration came from the Eltham bush and the nearby Yarra River. With his friends jazz musicians Graeme and Roger Bell, Peter bought land at the top of John Street: enchanted by Montsalvat, he had the objective of building a mud-brick house. War intervened, but then in 1948 he began working for Alistair Knox as a carpenter and mud-brick builder. By then, Peter had married, necessitating a larger house, which he built with help from Alistair Knox. As a trained architectural draftsman, Peter later progressed to working for Alistair in that role, eventually running the drafting office during the 1960s. He was deeply involved in the foundation of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, and went on to design many gardens, some in partnership with Alistair Knox and Gordon Ford. He died in 1997 and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with his wife Cecile. The tunes in the set of sheet music are mostly marches, jaunty and bright songs from the 1910s. The sheet music were published by W H P & Co., which was the company of William Henry Paling, Sydney. Paling was born in the Netherlands in 1825. He was a musician, composer, and violin teacher at the Academy of Rotterdam. In 1853 he arrived in Sydney where he became a piano and violin teacher and a professor of music at a ladies' college. He opened the W H Paling music warehouse around the same time, at 85 Wynyard Square in Sydney. He initiated clubs and groups, was involved in fundraising in the community, and conducted a Philharmonic Society concert. He seized the opportunity to supply the growing demand for pianos and local sheet music, becoming an agency for European manufacturers. He made several trips to Europe to supply his business. In 1875 the firm opened up premises in George Street Sydney. On his 1884-85 trip, he met Pietro Marich, an Austrian musician and businessman who then joined Piling's company and successfully expanded it into large premises with showrooms. In 1886 Piling's brother John joined the firm as partner. In 1883 it became a limited liability company, setting up in other major cities. He had many civic involvements and eventually presented his model farm at Campden for use as a hospital, along with finances to erect buildings on the land. He became ill after a trip to Europe, passing away in 1895, but the company continued in business.The collection of sheet music represents the musical and entertainment taste of the early 20th century. Sheet music was collected from Europe and locally and played in homes and public gatherings for listening to, for dancing and for background music. This program was for an event to celebrate the golden anniversary 950 years) of the official opening of Orbost's Commonwealth Hotel. It was organised by Chas and Una Roberts (nee Marshall) and was a fund-raiser for O.C.C.A. (Orbost Continuing Care}). This group was initiated by Brenda Murray who was the founding chairperson of the Orbost Continuing Care Appeal, which raised money to build an aged persons' facility for Orbost. The evening was compered by Graeme Eddy. The performers included: Victoria Strait, Leslie Strait, Norma Williams, Pauline Strait, Hoard Oberg and Wayne Stuart. All were accomplished musicians from New South Wales. Daughter of George Temple and Mary McAuslane of Castlemaine, Hilda married James Kerr in 1893 and lived at Lincluden, Raymond Street, Orbost. Her husband, Dr James Kerr, was a Scot who had come to Australia as a ship's doctor and practised in NSW before visiting Orbost on a government vaccination programme. He liked Orbost and returned there, its first doctor, until his death in 1928. Hilda was sometimes referred to as 'Mrs Dr Kerr.' She and her sisters Mabel Stewart Temple and Margaret Ferrie Temple were all talented writers and musicians. This poem is an example of the talent of Hilda Temple Kerr. Hilda Temple Kerr (1874-1956) grew up in Orbost. She was very talented and published several books.
