The Hopkins River One Mile Swim started in 1960 as part of an Aquatic Day to raise funds for the Warrnambool Olympic Pool. Since 1961 a measured One Mile Course (1600 metres) was used, the course being up river for approx. 286 metres, then to the bridge and back to the jetty to the finishing line. It was a handicap race. The race was abandoned after 46 years (2005). The booklet is of some importance as it gives the details of the Hopkins River One Mile Race, an event that was a prominent one in Warrnambool for 46 years. The booklet records the achievements of the competitors and the work of the committees involved and will be useful for researchers. This is a booklet containing a souvenir program for the 40th Annual One Mile Swim in the Hopkins River in 1999 and a Full Race History from 1960 to 1999. It has been produced in-house by the Warrnambool Surf Lifesaving Club and has a blue cardboard front cover and a grey back cover. The photocopied and typed pages have been bound with black plastic. The contents include newspaper cuttings, photocopies of photographs, lists of winners and a list of the race’s sponsors. Eventually at a meeting at the Palace Hotel in January 1946, it was resolved to form the Torquay Surf Club but the name was changed to Torquay Surf Lifesaving Club on 20 February 1946. Building of first clubhouse was completed in 1946. The photograph shows the view of the shore and Lady Bay with the Breakwater and Middle Island all visible. It was taken to show that the Flagstaff Hill area was unlikely to have any further development between it and the Bay, with the view of development of the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. This photograph, a print, is one of a set of five that show the site of Flagstaff Hill. The photographer was John Lindsay, Founding Director of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village, with the words "Photo J Lindsay" on the back. It was taken in the early 1970s during the initial stages of the development of Flagstaff Hill as a Museum and Maritime Village. The photographs belonged to the donor's grandparents, who lived in the Warrnambool district of Allansford/Naringal. The photograph is a record of the site and surrounds of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village before its development and opening in 1975. It shows the Surfside Holiday Park, Surf Lifesaving Club, and the Breakwater. The photograph is significant for recording the location and condition of the Lower Lighthouse on the Hill.Coloured photograph, glassy print, one of a set of five. Unusual choice of location by Port Campbell Surf club due to Port Campbell beach being too small. The Surf Carnival was held at Newfield Bay (possibly for two years running). Eyewitness accounts advise that one year the surf was so rough that the event was abandoned. This photograph appears to show calmer sea. In order to get the surf boats onto the beach a track was bulldozed over the sand dunes.
