More than 100 old students, teachers and others associated with the Ballarat Technical Art School assembled at a gathering at the Alexandria on Saturday night in honor of Mr. H. H. Smith, who has retired from the school after 35 years as principal. Mr. D. Johnston, acting principal, and a former student, handed over a portrait in oils of Mr. Smith painted by Mrs. Amalie Colquhoun, of Melbourne, another former student, who was also among the visitors. He then returned... east sydney technical school art school ballarat school ...Neville Mirvane Bunning was born in Rockhampton, Queensland in 1902. He was home taught until 1916 and then was a boarder at Geelong Grammar School, Victoria until 1921. He then returned to Queensland and worked on the family property. During this time he built ceramic kilns and taught himself the required skills for ceramiic production. During the Depression he went to Sydney and set up an artist's studio. In 1934 he went to England and studied, wrote and did commission work. Achieving local success and had work acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Neville returned to Australia and became a lecturer at East Sydney Technical School until the outbreak of the Second World War. He joined the RAAF. After the War he joined the staff of the Art School of the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries until his retirement in 1964. Neville Bunning formed the Ballarat Artist's Society, a group which sponsored art and invite guests to speak to students and the public of Ballarat. He wrote a weekly column in "The Courier", the local newspaper where he encouraged people to be more aware of the trends in art. His works were included in the 1988 Australian Bicentennial Exhibition. His sympathetic understanding of Aboriginal culture is recorded in a letter written in 1937 to the Victoria and Albert Museum. Neville Bunning continued painting during his retirement. His last major exhibition was held at the Golden Age Gallery in Ballarat in 1983. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Framed etching exhibited as part of "Parallel Prints", a Prints project which presents the same exhibition simultaneously in New Zealand, at Art at Wharepuke and at a gallery in another part of the world. Eleven Australian artists were invited to join New Zealand-based printmaker Mark Graver to contribute to a portfolio that will be shown simultaneously at Art at Wharepuke, New Zealand and the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Victoria. Using the uniqueness of the reproducible print allows for the same works to be viewed at the same time on opposite sides of the world. This highlights the democratic nature of printmaking and questions the aura of the unique. Which venue is showing the 'real' work? Which the reproduction? The Australian artists showing alongside Mark Graver are James Pasakos, Bruno Leti, Martin King, David Frazer, John Neeson, Antonietta Covino-Beehre, Deborah Klein, Deborah Williams, Melissa Smith, Jodi Heffernan and Susanna Castleden. The original concept, Parallel Prints NZ-UK in 2013, included invited artists from the UK and New Zealand. It featured the work of twelve diverse artists presented in a portfolio set. Each artist contributed one work on 300 x 300 mm paper in an edition of thirty-six. Part of the concept behind the project was to donate twelve of the portfolio sets to international collections. Institutions that have accepted a portfolio include the Victoria & Albert Museum and The Ashmolean Museum in the UK, the Jinling Museum of Art in Nanjing, China, and the Whangarei Art Museum, in New Zealand. As usual I can't tell you exactly in words what the story is,simply that I hope that this body of work evokes characters and implies the actions and interactions that engender a story. For me the story if seeking itself, trying to understand what about itself is repeatable yet malleable, rememberable yet changeable. The Triumph of Gutenberg' celebrates the seemingly ordinary by manifold ways that information is transferred and transformed. It arises from a fascination with the way a thought evolves from one idea to the next, often repeating itself, but sometime making leaps and in the dark mutating. Famed for introducing movable type and the printing press to Europe in 1450, Gutenberg enabled the mass production of books. He has consequently become a symbol for the power of the dissemination of knowledge. Vehicles for repeatability, like printing, are myriad and range from specific codes, such as DNA, to more ephemeral language systems like visual and narrative. Stories are my favourite vessels of memory, of recording. It seems that a story can have certain characteristics that allow it to be recognised as a particular story, indeed, that allow it to be repeated withing different narrations, different readings. As a visual storyteller, I have been curious about how much can change while the story remains the same, Within this visual exploration of what I consider to be a consistent story, conveyed through different media, scales, shapes, and styles, I have allowed mutations, which I hope will illuminate the repetition. In some ways this work is a direct response to Poussin's 'The Triumph of Pan', whose arrangement of figures approaches a kind of formal abstraction. As I worked through the drawing, painting and print that are in this exhibition, I have looked increasingly to more recent interpreters of that tradition like Beckmann, Layered, then, withing this story are other stories, other histories. In a metaphoric sense repeatability and mutability characterize both how the work came into being and how, being something more than paper, canvas and pigment, it can travel audiences' neural pathways as both memories of sights seen, as new thoughts ans/or as old thoughts and memories now mutated. From ...Elwyn (Jack) LYNN (6 November 1917 – 22 January 1997) Born Canowindra, New South Wales Sydney based artist Elwyn Lynn was a self-taught artist who often used unconventional painting media and expressive surfaces to create abstract work. He trained as a teacher, and was a teacher of English and History in Sydney Secondary schools until 1968. From 1969 to 1983 Elwynn Lynn was Curator of the Power Gallery of Contemporary Art at Sydney University where he built up an international collection, which is now within the Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art. He was an art critic at The Australian for many years, and wrote several books, including one on the artist Sir Sidney Nolan. Elwyn Lynn was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia in 1975. He won the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW in 1988, received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Sydney in 1969, and received the Emeritus Award from the Australia Council in 1994. Like most of Elwyn Lynn's work 'The' is essentially abstract, although evoking a sense of landscape. " Lynn’s heavy textures were created by mixing polyvinyl acetate (PVA) with sand, cement or plaster, after which it was left to dry in the sun or near a radiator. With the upper level drying and hardening first, its skin could be cut, sliced, poked, prodded and distressed, pushed into folds and corrugations." Art School in Sydney, and at art societies and the CAE ...Settling in Moyston in 1984, Nanette Bourke is a prominent figure in the Ararat and Grampians arts community, perhaps best known as a member of the ‘Grampians Four’ group of artists. Bourke has been a printmaker since the late 1960s, having studied at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney, and at art societies and the CAE in Melbourne before relocating to Western Victoria. Inspired by the woodcuts and linocuts by Melbourne artists of the 1920s and 1930s - Napier Waller, Murray Griffin, and especially Eric Thake - Bourke embraces the sophisticated results that can be achieved in this medium. Bourke holds a deep affinity with the natural environment, which is integral in her artistic life. Many of the works in this exhibition are inspired by the natural environment of the Grampians. In contrast to the often joyous depictions of Australian native flora, Bourke’s imagery also presents a poignant reminder of humankind’s negative impact on the environment. -
