The Synagogue was in Dowling Street, Bendigo. It was built in the Byzantine style. The building was square with thin square turrets at the corners, rising from the base to about 20 feet across the roof, each surmounted by a small dome with the double triangle at top. The fittings inside were the gift of Morris Samuel in 1875, at a cost of nearly 300 pounds and are of a beautifully rich appearance. The first synagogue was held in a tent early in 1853, when S. Moses of Sullivan and Moses, and J.P. Joseph, brother of the G.F. Joseph, officiated temporarily as clergymen. In 1854 a wooden building was erected, in which REv. Friedmann acted as minister till 1858. The new synagogue was erected by Vahland and Getschmann in 1870, costing over 2000 pounds and will hold 200 on the ground floor and nearly 100 in the gallery. Faded Bendigo Advertiser newspaper article dated 5.2.1988 re: Star of David which was saved by Gordon Glover's father from a pile of rubbish from the wrecking of the old Bendigo Synagogue in 1927. The article says that Harry Fogel and Alan Buchanek were trying to research the history of how the Jews in the area maintained the Jewish lifestyle and came in contact with the Glover family. Gordon Glover knew more about the history of the Synagogue and the stories of Jews in Bendigo 'than any Jew we could find 'said Harry Fogel. The Cape of Good Hope Store was the first unofficial Synagogue run by a Mr Helbrun. Four articles about the South Caulfield Hebrew Congregation from the Australian Jewish Newspaper: 1/ An article dated 15/09/1961 about the appointment of Rabbi Rudzki to the South Caulfield Hebrew Congregation and celebration for that. Page turners were used in churches and synagogues to read Holy books, to turn pages in huge manuscripts and books (and later newspapers) as well as open double pages without a sharp knife (letter openers). This was from the home of W.J. Sebire in Wandin.A highly polished cream coloured long vintage celluloid page turner used for reading. It has a curved round ended long smooth blade which is paler than the darker short round pointed handle. Both sections have small dark brown fine floral designs on one side. This ensemble was not owned by Lady Barbara Grimwade unlike the rest of the garments in this collection. It was donated to the Gallery by Mrs Jessie Briggs after she became aware of the Gallery’s extensive Tu collection. Mrs Briggs (Krongold) wore this ensemble to the marriage of her son, Lionel Krongold, at the Kew Synagogue, Melbourne. To compliment this outfit, Mrs Briggs wore gold shoes and a small Italian gold bag with the gown, a pair of diamond drop earrings, gold chain with diamonds, a gold bracelet with four diamonds and a simple Omega gold watch. -

This dress was worn by Nancy Kirsner (nee Rosenhain, b. 1906) and her older sister Mona (b. 1903) as children in England. Nancy Bertha Rosenhain was born in Worchestershire to German-Australian metallurgist Walter Rosenhain and Australian Louisa Rosenhain (nee Monash). Louisa was the sister of Sir John Monash; the couple met through a synagogue in Melbourne before settling in England. Nancy travelled to Melbourne in 1929 and was married to Marcus Kirsner on 24 July 1932. Nancy and Marcus lived together at 3 Baroona Court in Brighton.White cotton piqué dress. Square neck. Skirt gathered at waist. Broderie anglais trim around neck and sleeves. Hand-embroidered cornelli work on sleeves, bodice, and skirt. Small frill on skirt.
