Defending The Chase by Marcel Cameron; November 16, 1994, Issue 167, News Retrieved from https://www.greenleft.org.au/1994/167/news/defending-chase "In August 1990, a grassroots campaign to halt clearing of bush at The Chase began after access roads encroached on the nesting habitat of Melbourne's last family of wedge-tailed eagles. Three on-site demonstrations were each attended by up to 200 people and attracted widespread media coverage. Young people played an active role in the campaign, including people from Environmental Youth Alliance, Children for Conservation and local school students. In December 1990, Eltham Shire Council voted to acquire 12 hectares of The Chase for a wildlife reserve; the developers received a compensation package which included $125,000 and the right to sell two extra allotments."Colour photograph of a baby wedge-tail eagle on the nest at 'The Chase', Warrandyte.wildlife, eagle, warrandyte, the chase.

The symbolic egg form at the heart of this design echoes the hope for recovery and new life, and for the rebirth of the land. The piece also references the conservation role of the park and in particular the role this park plays for the many birds that live and nest within. The 4 metre high egg form is made from recycled timbers and is designed to be tactile, organic and peaceful within the environment. (Objective A1455462)

Egg and nest collecting was considered a hobby for the 19thC Victorian gentlemen and the handwritten notes that often accompany the eggs can be as valuable to curators as the eggs themselves. Details have helped scientists understand the changes in bird nesting behavior in the past century and some of these historical eggs have also played a role in major scientific discoveries. Lorna Chick was a local artist whose works depict farming and community landscapes, which reflected her main occupation of living and working on the family farm with her husband and two sons. Chick was a naïve artist who used the aerial viewpoint as a constant device in her landscapes. Her naïve art style allowed her to distort the common notion of landscape paintings being horizontal viewpoints, bringing a different understanding to her artwork.naïve artRural City of Wangaratta Collection, purchased with funds from the Wangaratta Art CouncilA rectangular aerial landscape oil painting of a farming community overlooked by eagles painted using vibrant coloursObverse: LORNA CHICK ©wangaratta art gallery, lorna chick, landscape, farming, eagles, north east victoria, painting
