One of the earliest electric trams in Victoria. This open tram design was commonly known as 'toast rack'. One is preserved , MMTB V Class 214, and resides at Hawthorn Tram Museum. They / formed an unofficial guard of / honour around Wendouree / Parade. / The trams were gaily decor- / ated for Opening Day. As the / line of cars came down Camp / Hill (Sturt Street) filled with / local dignitaries, the brakes on / the last car failed and it crashed / into the one in front. The win- / dows of both cars were / smashed, and the occupants / who had been sitting in state / made an undignified exit. / Seating accommodation was / from 32 to 36. They date from the 1890s to the 2000s.Modern postcard produced by the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria. Photograph shows a side view of a single truck closed cross-bench tram with trolley pole raised and depot workman in driver cabin. No tram number is visible. A coupling device appears to be a feature at one end. Behind the tram are trees and perhaps gardens.
