This photographic copy of an older photo shows a tram track laying gang in an unnamed street. While the inscription describes these men as a the Victorian Railways McKenzie gang, the freshly installed tramway rail with flangeways and the completed tramway track on the adjacent roadway suggest one of two explanations. Perhaps they were diverted from their usual work of laying railway track; or the photographer was mistaken in his description. This street scene may be in Melbourne or in one of Victoria's three regional cities of Ballarat, Bendigo or Geelong where extensive electric tramways were constructed between 1900 and the 1930s.Yields information about early tramway construction.Black and white photograph with inscription on photograph and one word on rear.On front: 'McKenzie Gang Victorian Railways [sic] ????'; on rear: 'Victoria'.victorian railways, mckenzie gang, tramway rail, flangeways, diverted from their usual work, melbourne, ballarat, bendigo, geelong, 1900, 1930s

The photograph shows part of the track laying process in Swanston Street between Collins Street. and Flinders Lane with pedestrians, onlookers and motor cars. A large steam powered roller is partially shown at left carrying the name of a popular construction company, The Foundation Coy. Ltd., that was contracted for many of the cable-to-electric tram conversions in the 1920s. Note that the rails being positioned are railway rails that required a check plate to be bolted to each rail to create a flangeway in the road surface. These plates can be seen stacked at the right of the track bed with pre-drilled holes. Work commenced on the conversion of the cable tram track in Swanston Street in December 1925 and proceed in a northerly direction towards Lonsdale Street.
