Black and white photograph of Freight Car 206 at Preston Workshops. This tram began as one of 10 single truck saloon trams built by J.G. Brill & Co., USA and assembled by Duncan and Fraser, Adelaide. It entered service for the NMETL as tram number 5 on 13/10/1906. It was transferred to MMTB and renumbered as U class tram 206 on 1/8/1922. It was withdrawn from service in 1938 and was converted to a freight car. In November 1947 it was withdrawn from service as a spare freight car after a bad accident and remained in storage until March 1950 when it was scrapped.trams, tramways, freight tram, preston workshops, nmetl, tram 206

Rod Atkins advised 11/10/2020: "The bus body is one of the four James Motors of South Melbourne body's first fitted to the group of 12 Thornycroft "J" chassis in 1924-1925 numbered 13 to 24. Then in 1929 they were all transferred to the ADC chassis but four were retained in late thirties to early forties for possible further use. The four bodies were then fitted to the new International K6 chassis in 1943. The vehicle numbers were 19 to 308 16 to 309 24 to 311 and 18 to 312. They were finally disposed of in 1949." Photograph of U206 in Mount Alexander Road, with the NMETL brick powerhouse behind. The driver is hopping off the tram (to attend points) while the conductor is on the rear platform. Note the drop bars rather than folding gates as on other cars. The Cooling tower is not in the photo, indicating it has been demolished. The Power Station was demolished in 1925 (check). In the background is the St Georges Anglican church which was built during 1925. Catalogue No. 206 of the J. G. Brill Co. of Philadelphia PA, titled "Brill Trucks" on front cover and "City and Interurban Trucks" on page 1. Comprises: Card cover very light grey on outside, grey inside which is a larger size than that of the rest of the book. Has the names of the J. G. Brill associated companies (American Car Company of St. Louis, G. C. Kuhlman Car Co. of Cleveland Ohio, Wason Manufacturing Company of Springfield, Massachusetts and Compagnie J. G. Brill, Paris France) as well. On the inside of the front cover and on the inside back cover are patterns involving the Brill logo. To the printed catalogue is a matching out 4pp again with the same Brill logos. This sheet is the same size as the text pages. Forty page printed text on a heavy gloss manila colour art paper. Front cover gives details of Brill's office addresses, and agents, including the Australasian agent - Noyes Brothers. Page 3 gives an introduction to the quality of Brill trucks and page 39 gives an index to the various trucks and components. Each truck type has a photograph, parts list and dimension details. Trucks covered are: Radiax, 21E, 22, 22E, 27E, 27F, 27G, 27MCB, 39E, 50E. Equipment detailed are the Half-Ball brake hanger, oil retaining center bearing, standard journal (axle) box, solid forged side frames and axle data.
