The Melbourne cable tramway system operated between 1885 and 1940.Former Melbourne cable tram bell used for fortnightly and annual meetings of Ringwood Apex Club, mounted on timber base with metal shields showing presidents for each year from 1966 to 2003. Ringwood Apex Club closed in 2003-04.This dinner gong, formerly a Melbourne cable tram bell, was donated by inaugural secretary Wal Hodgson 21.10.67. Demonstrates the Museum's ticketing systems and ongoing production of tickets.Block of 200 tickets - teal ink on off white, slightly greasy feel paper with numbers printed in black, denomination 20c, lettered A 173400 - A173599, headed Ballarat Tourist Tramway. The 200 tickets have been stapled onto a heavy cardboard back with a heavy metal staple. The tickets are in the style of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria tramway tickets. Tickets in use as adult return tickets from 24/12/1975 to 1/11/75, child return tickets from 1/11/75 to 30/6/78 and as child singles from 1/7/78 to 1/11/80. On rear in purple ink are details of the Ballarat Tourist Tramway operating details, contact address and that it is operated by a volunteer organisation. The 200 tickets have been stapled onto a heavy cardboard back with a heavy metal staple. The tickets are in the style of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria tramway tickets. Original block A 001 to A200 added 30/6/2004 - from archive holdings. Tickets in use as adult fare from 1/11/1975 to 31/7/1977 and as child fares from 1/7/1978 to 31/10/1985. Child single ticket for while, late 80's to 30/6/1991. Last block issued 1/1990. Ticket issue book shows that the first ticket/block? was collected for the archives - 10/9/1975. Book - dark grey Rexene covers, with title - "Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board - Rules, Regulations". Two sections, stapled and bound within heavy card covers, 80 pages with a typed index pasted inside rear covers, printed by Sands & McDougall, Melbourne. Authorised by W. O. Strangward Secretary 1923 and printed 1924. On first page, has number "6246" stamped onto the page. Provides the Rules and Regulations of the Board concerning Accidents, fire, general instructions, signals, uniforms, staff working, special instructions to Motormen and Conductors, tickets, safety for both Cable and Electric tramways. By-Law No. 5 provided on pages 76 to 80. On page 80 has the Seal of the Board and those who signed the document - Alex Cameron Chairman, Thos. O'L Reynolds Member and W. O. Strangward Secretary. Inside rear cover is a 12 page typed index to the rules in broken into sections for each letter of the alphabet - pages for M to O missing. Has an introduction, a preface that gives a brief history of the tramway system in Melbourne, 20 buildings and points on interest in Melbourne and how to get there, with sketches by Clive Fink, a list of electrified routes and a cable routes at the time with details of terminals and points of interest along the route. Set of 14 black and white photographs of the use of former sleeper transport car, W2 485 - see page 80 of Destination City 5th Edition for more details of the tram. Tram body being used to train emergency staff how to recover a tramcar that had been tipped over onto its side. DC5, notes it was stored at Preston workshops and later "used an instruction car to train emergency crews in the righting of the overturned trams. It was overturned several times in this role." Note: - would have been at the time, probably the only way to do this, as mobile cranes were only just starting to be developed. Truck is an AEC built Matador truck. Possibly these photos who the first time used as such, as one of the life guards was being cut off in the photos. 1 - tram on its side 2 - ditto - showing underside of tram 3 - pulling one of the bogies clear. 4 - cutting away a lifeguard 5 - pulling the other bogie clear 6 - setting up the chains to recover the tram - note the sleepers it is lying on. 7 - ditto 8 - starting to lift the tramcar 9 - rolling the tramcar upright 10 - tram upright and being jacked up to roll the bogies back under 11 - pushing a bogie under 12 - ditto 13 - as for 9 14 - as for 10 15 - similar to 9trams, tramways, training, emergency, accidents, recovery, mmtb, preston workshops, tram 485, w2 class, aec, r10 vehicle, works cars -
