Type of switch fitted to Melbourne W class trams for switching the line breaker on or off. This switch controls power to the line breaker activated by the tram controller. Had been fitted to the Restaurant tram No. 3 or Cuthberts 939. Was found to be defective - the power was available to the controller even when switched to the OFF position, that is, failed unsafe. Was replaced 4/11/2015 from a spare. Has the name of the manufacturer on the cover. Used by tram drivers to warn road users of their presence or starting to move. MMTB drawing R8808 shows the mounting mechanism and operation. Demonstrates a tramcar warning device used by drivers.Cast steel and fabricated steel foot gong, consisting of cast bell, weighted striker or clapper operating mechanism and parts to enable it to be attached to the underside of the tramcar or driver's platform. The Foot gong plunger is missing. The clapper part has been extended by welding a section of steel onto it and a rolled section of stainless steel wire has been attached to ring it remotely from an overhead position. Specification document comprising printed cover, eight typewritten pages (black carbon copy) and two photo pages of a J.G. Brill Co. of Philadelphia PA, Birney Safety Car. Specification No. 100, revised 1/10/1919. On the printed cover, which has three holes for a clip on the left hand side, printed with the Birney Safety Car trade mark, the names of the J. G. Brill associated companies (American Car Company of St. Louis, G. C. Kuhlman Car Co. of Cleveland Ohio, and Wason Manufacturing Company of Springfield, Massachusetts). On the inside of the front cover and on the outer back cover is the Brill logo. On the inside of the back cover is a floor / seating plan of the Birney Safety Car, giving overall dimensions, location of equipment etc. Item secured with one brass clip in the top left hand corner. The eight typed pages details the specification of the construction of the tramcar, equipment details etc for a single truck, double end Birney Safety (tram) car. Gives dimensions of the tramcar, materials, construction methods, finishes, equipment, glass, etc. Also details additional items that could be ordered with the tramcar. First photo shows the Birney car without a trolley pole, lettered for the KC Rys. Co. The second photo shows an interior view of the tramcar. Handmade book with light green covers made from a cut file holder with brown paper glued on the inside, containing 39 typed (original) sheets of paper giving Instructions or Rules to Motormen. Has five page index, then 34 pages, with 104 rules or instructions, covering Tramcar Equipment (electrical), location of faults, tramcar braking, failure of the mechanical brakes, tramcar emergency braking, automatic braking, automatic electric signals and general instructions for Ballarat. The brown paper appears to have been placed on the outside, as it is cut and glued on the inside of the book. Individual sheets held into the book with a metal clip. On the rear of the book, a small piece of cardboard has been glued over the back of the metal strip. Notes mentions bogie trams, so therefore post 1945. Gives details of route electric signals, use of doors on the trams relevant to the central median strip. On page 4, has hand drawn diagram showing the motors in series and parallel. On page 8 has a hand drawn diagram showing the car lighting circuit arrangements. Has been folded in the middle so as to store in pockets of a coat.
