The Birney tram was named after its designer Charles Birney and was designated a "safety car". It was a type G tram that had a smaller wheel base and was designed specifically for routes with lighter traffic as it could only carry 50 passengers. It featured folding doors and steps and was the first tram that could be operated by the driver alone without a conductor. This particular tram was built in 1925 by the J G Brill Company in Philadelphia, USA. It was flat-packed to Adelaide where it was reassembled. It operator in Adelaide until 1935 when it was sold to Geelong before again being sold to the Bendigo Tramways in 1947. It continued to operate until the tramways closure in 1972. Its manufacture demonstrates from an industrial aspect a period of history following the occupation of Japan by the USA after the second world war and has a strong association with this event.Insulator - known as an egg type - ceramic - fired clay (porcelain) finished with a brown colour with two holes for span wire with the holes offset to each other. As Japan needed to rebuild their economy after the war, part of the agreement to allow them to export goods out of their country was that they had to mark 50% of all items with "Occupied Japan" or "Made in Occupied Japan." This could be done with a paper label, cloth label (as on scarves, doilies, clothing), engraved, handwritten or stamped. Thus, you may come across things, such as a salt and pepper set, where only one of the pair is marked OJ and the other will just have "Japan" on it. Book, titled, "Installation of Rail Bonds by Electric and Copper Welding". Consisting of a 36 page book, printed with many photographs, two tones (black and grey) printed in grey and black ink illustrating the equipment that was made by The Electric Railway Improvement Co. of Cleveland Ohio, USA. Covers in addition to the 36 pages, are on the outside, marbled paper, bluish grey, with embossed dark blue titles and company logo (ERICO), with light blue bands and a photograph of a rail based welding machine on the front cover. Stapled with three staples. On page 2, has been over stamped in purple ink, the name and address of the Australasian representative, "Charles Wright". Nine Page photocopy of a Westinghouse manual for Westinghouse S6-A and S6-B Compressor Governors (often known as Beatle Back type). Includes cross sectional diagrams of both compressors, photographs, connection diagrams, and detailed descriptions. The descriptions include notes on the compressor, switch portion, regulating portion of the device, regulation and adjustments, setting of cutouts, installation and maintenance. Originally prepared by Westinghouse, Wilmarding PA, USA, 20/9/1916. Retyped by MMTB 5/1955 and provided to Warren Doubleday from Preston Workshops c1980. Copy contained within a stapled and bound manila folder with handwritten title on outside. 2nd copy added 9-6-2019 from the Melbourne Tram Museum - in a manila folder with a black binding. Applications from NZ, UK and USA had been received. Mentions the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society, Borough of Sebastopol. The SEC was selecting the most worthy, but eliminating applications for them as sleepouts. Has a photo of No.31 at the junction of Bridge and Main Streets Ballarat. Lettered in blue ball point pen and underlined in red. 2225.2 - Section titled "Single Tramcar' (Single truck trams) and detailing the use, number and where the tram was taken to, or disposed to from Ballarat following closure. Lists 16 tramcars. Trams 31 and 32 were shown as SEC Creswick Road. 31 - later to (Kaniva > Haddon > USA). Lettered in blue ink or pencil with red lining. 32 - Maryborough, then to BTM Collection. 2225.3 - Section titled "Bogie Tramcar' and detailing the use, number and where the tram was taken to, or disposed to from Ballarat following closure. Lists 10 tramcars. Lettered in blue ink or pencil with red lining. Note a number of the bogie trams have since relocated since the list was prepared.
