The foundation stone of the New Wesleyan Church, Were Street, Brighton, Victoria was laid by Mrs W P Wells, the wife of the Superintendent of the Brighton Circuit and President of the Victorian Wesleyan Conference in 1887. The foundation stone was temporarily removed in the late 1930s and the 1937 publication "Were Street Jubilee" details the "proposed Jubilee Church". Rev Laurel Grace Davey was firstly a minister in the Methodist Church and then the Uniting Church. She was ordained in 1971 soon after the Victorian and Tasmanian Methodist Conference opened up the way for women to be ordained. Before that Laurel was a Deaconess, appointed to Geelong in 1956 as probationer. She also served in Parishes of Newport, Moe-Yallourn, Essendon, Nyah District (Mallee), Donald Heytesbury (Timboon), and was twice Presbytery Chairperson. She moved to Traralgon in 1993 after retirement where she was a one of the founders of the Fabric Art Group and the Friendship Club. His ministry was exercised in Northcote/Clifton Hill (1942–45), Yarrawonga and associated district (1945–50), Ballarat Dawson Street and "Zion" Sebastopol (1950–68), and Rockdale Congregational, Sydney, later Uniting (1968–83). Due to ill health, Ron retired on the 30th of April 1983. He was President of the Australian Council of Churches from 1971 to 1973, President of the Congregational Union of NSW from 1973 to 1975. Sir Albert Ernest Coates (1895-1977), surgeon, was born on 28 January 1895 at Ballarat, Victoria, eldest of seven children of Arthur Coates, letter carrier, and his wife Clara Annie, née Eustice, both Victorian born. Although their worldly possessions were few, Arthur and Clara raised their family in an affectionate atmosphere and instilled in them the virtues of honesty, industry and education.
