Programme - Ephemera, Chatham Primary School Fathers' Club 'Trial by Jury' programme, 16/11/1929
... Mr A V Webb... A V Webb - not found. Mr McKie - not found. Victor Harold... A V Webb - not found. Mr McKie - not found. Victor Harold ...The program describes the performance as 'original burlesque' and was written, composed and produced by A E Woffinden and A W Sutton, members of the Chatham Fathers' Club, to raise money for the school. There were 250 programs printed at a cost of one pound fifteen shillings. This performance starred 21 of the fathers with Mr W Crellin as the only female character, Miss Eileen Flapper. The Chatham Fathers' Club became renowned locally for the quality of its performances, repeats being given to other community organisations. In the publication 'Chatham Past & Present: A Patchwork of People' there is also a photo of the cast taken in the quadrangle of the school. The original program and photo were lent to the school at the time of the 70 year reunion in 1997 by Mrs Jean Lacy (nee Walker), whose father took part as a member of the jury. Many of the performers were also in the formal photo of the Father's Club, taken in February 1928 on the front steps of the school. The original hangs in the school entry foyer and is reproduced in 'A Patchwork of People: Chatham Past and Present'. In relation to names, these are better identified and the following identifications have been reached by referencing this and the 1931 electoral roll. The geographic spread of addresses reflects that when Chatham opened in August 1927, surrounding schools were overcrowded and some families chose to relocate their children. Albert Ernest Woffinden (manufacturer) lived at 14 Banool Road, Surrey Hills. Alfred William Sutton (clerk) lived at 528 Whitehorse Road, Surrey Hills. Mr A Davidson - not found in electoral roll. Walter Dallas Kinross (mechanic) lived at 72 Empress Road, Surrey Hills. Gilbert Leslie (Bert) Rae (sales) lived at 63 Empress Road, Surrey Hills. Mr Joseph P Braddick (mechanic) lived at 1 Northcote Avenue, Canterbury; now Balwyn (NB/ Name is miss-spelt Braddock in the program). Norman Patrick Smart (bt opr) lived at 61 Sir Garnet Road, Surrey Hills. Henry Albert Wysham (show card writer) lived at 9 Northcote Avenue, Canterbury. Mr Sidney Bessant (labourer) lived at 191 Mont Albert Road, Canterbury. William Morrison (teacher) lived at 37 Chatham Road, Canterbury. William Charles Crellin (breadcarter) lived at 59 Empress Road, Surrey Hills. Mr F Parsons - taken as Fred Parsons (bricklayer) lived at 2 Kaarumba Grove, Balwyn. Mr MacDougal (incorrectly spelt in program) is Dougall MacDougall (gas collector) lived at 5 Wells Street, Surrey Hills. Mr A V Webb - not found. Mr McKie - not found. Victor Harold Theodore Clow (civil servant) lived at 4 Talbot Avenue, Balwyn; listed as T. Clow. Mr M Walker (donor's father) not found in electoral roll for 1931; thought to have lived in Sir Garnet Road. Mr McLeod - a number listed in the 1931 electoral roll. Richard Frost (carriage builder) lived at 341 Mont Albert Road, Surrey Hills. Mr Allen - a number listed in the 1931 electoral roll. Mr J Tulloch - not found in the 1931 electoral roll. This is an example of 'home-spun' entertainment and creativity of the era when the sense of community was very real. It is an example of the fundraising efforts undertaken by school communities to provide 'extras' that would later be regarded as 'basics'. For many years the sense of community in this part of Surrey Hills revolved around Chatham school, the Benson Street Methodist Church and the football club, located at the Canterbury Recreation Ground.A photocopy of the programme for the Chatham Primary School Fathers' Club "Trial by Jury" performance on 16 November 1929. It includes the words of the song 'Carry me back to dear old Chatham'. It lists the performers by character and some details regarding the Chatham Primary School Fathers' Club.chatham primary school, chatham primary school fathers' club, theatrical productions, entertainment, albert ernest woffinden, fundraising, alfred william sutton, walter dallas kinross, gilbert leslie (bert) rae, joseph p braddick, norman patrick smart, henry albert wysham, sidney bessant, william morrison, william charles crellin, fred parsons, dougall macdougall, mr a v webb, mr mckie, victor harold theodore clow, mr m walker, mr mcleod, richard frost, mr allen, mr j tulloch -

Air Raid Precautions (ARP) badges, Circa early 1940's
... Mr Webb King was an Air Raid Warden during World War 2..., DC 374, DC 375, DC 376, DC 377, DC 379, DC 388, DC 389. Mr ...Mr Webb King was an Air Raid Warden during World War 2. These badges were found when his workshop was being cleared out, and so were donated to our society. The badges in our possession do not have the word WARDEN printed on them, like the image of the badge shown on the Darebin Heritage 'Air Raid Protection Services (ARP)' publication, or the image of a badge offered for sale on ebay. At this stage we are uncertain of why this is so. If anybody knows the answer then please leave a message on this site. During World War 2 Australian municipalities were expected to take precautions against air raids, with the Government campaigning to recruit men over 45 to be volunteer Air Raid Wardens. It was also common for women to become wardens. Wardens carried gas masks, helmets, and rattles or whistles. The wardens received 7 to 8 one hour sessions of training, and their chief duty was to advise people of precautions to take, and to ensure those precautions were taken. Air Raid Precautions included air raid drills, shelters (usually trenches), first aid, fire fighting, rescue of 'gassed' persons, evacuation drills, demolition and repair squads, monitoring of blackouts. Melbourne was deemed vulnerable to aerial attack because of its centralised port and industrial facilities and so Anti-aircraft guns were installed in Maribyrnong. By early 1942 more than 60,000 people voluntarily carried out Air Raid Precautions duties according to the Autobiography of Robert V. J. Padula OAM. As the threat diminished during 1943 and 1944 the need for air raid precautions was slowly reduced, and some shelters (trenches) were filled. The two photos showing Air Raid Wardens are out of copyright and have been sourced from the 'Argus Newspaper Collection of Photographs, State Library of Victoria.' The image showing one warden on Swanston Street Melbourne has been cropped to remove extras not connected with the photo. Other sources of information for this report are: (1) http://bpadula.tripod.com/autobiography/id100.html, (2) https://www.awm.gov.au/exhibitions/underattack/mobilise/precautions.asp, (3) http://heritage.darebinlibraries.vic.gov.au/article/57. The ARP badges are a historic reminder of the precautions that were taken in Victoria during the early years of World War 2. The precautions were an effort to minimise the harmful effects of a theoretical air raid. The war started to turn and so an air raid never came, however many people received valuable training in what precautions needed to be taken.Pressed metal round badges with pins. Main feature of badges is the large whitish lettering ARP on a red background. A black outlined crown and the word VICTORIA in red on whitish background is also on the badges. At the bottom of the badges in black are the letters DC plus the numbers of the badges.Serial Numbers of the badges are: DC 361, DC 362, DC 364, DC 368, DC 370, DC 374, DC 375, DC 376, DC 377, DC 379, DC 388, DC 389.arp. arp badge, air raid precautions, air raid precautions warden, warden, badges -
Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village
Document - Ship Model Plans, Loch Ard, October 1977
... Wool Clipper 1873”. “The plans were drawn by Mr P Webb... P Webb to the order of the Committee through Mr P Williams ...These two framed model ship plans are from more than 650 produced for the LOCH ARD Centenary (1878-1978) Commemoration Committee. These plans were originally researched, designed and distributed in 1977 to assist entrants in the Committee’s Ship Model Competition. The competition was arranged as a means of creating public interest and awareness for the 100th anniversary of the tragic LOCH ARD shipwreck on Victoria’s south west coast in 1878. The main subject specified for modelling was “The Loch Ard ― Iron Wool Clipper 1873”. “The plans were drawn by Mr P Webb to the order of the Committee through Mr P Williams, organizer of the competition. The details were based on all available information which resulted in considerable historical research…and received favourable comment from model makers because of their attention to detail…In excess of 650 sets of plans were sold before entries closed…Many plans were probably purchased by collectors and interested persons for historical reference. An illustrated historical story sheet…was prepared and enclosed with the plans…” (‘Loch Ard Shipwreck Centenary 1878-1978 Report’, November 1978). An example of the attention to historical detail delivered on the plans is the inclusion of the following useful information about the original vessel: “Tonnage….1,693 G.R.T., 1,624 N.R.T. Builders….Charles Connell & Co., Ltd., Scotstoun, 1873. Owners….General Shipping Co., Glasgow, (Aitken Lilburn & Co., Ltd.)”. The quality of research and drafting makes these framed copies of considerable interpretive value to related items from the LOCH ARD shipwreck on display at Flagstaff Hill. They were originally mass produced but are now out of print. Flagstaff Hill retains other (unframed) copies in storage. The plans, in conjunction with the scale Ship Model of the LOCH ARD also on display, are of interpretive significance to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. The plans provide historical and technological context to artefacts from the shipwreck, increasing understanding and appreciation of those objects. Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from LOCH ARD is significant for being one of the largest collections of artefacts from this shipwreck in Victoria. It is significant for its association with the shipwreck, which is on the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR S417). The collection is significant because of the relationship between the objects, as together they have a high potential to interpret the story of the LOCH ARD. The LOCH ARD collection is archaeologically significant as the remains of a large international passenger and cargo ship. The LOCH ARD collection is historically significant for representing aspects of Victoria’s shipping history and its potential to interpret sub-theme 1.5 of Victoria’s Framework of Historical Themes (living with natural processes). The collection is also historically significant for its association with the LOCH ARD, which was one of the worst and best known shipwrecks in Victoria’s history. Two framed model ship plans of the LOCH ARD. These are detailed and researched plans from the original vessel, drawn to scale and printed on good quality paper, and framed behind glass to be hung on display. One slightly smaller plan “Lines, Decks and Details” portrays the hull lines as a body plan (straight on at the bow), a sheer plan (full side view), and a half breadth plan (a top-down view of deck to keel), as well as two top-down views of the upper decks and main deck with fittings and details of specific fixtures. One slightly larger “Sail and Rigging Plan” presents a side on, above deck view of masts and shrouds and a front on, above deck view showing “Elevation of Mainmast Looking Aft”. Each plan bears the draftsman’s initials and date of completion (“P.A.W. 10/77”). The larger plan also includes a boxed label attributing the project to the “LOCH ARD CENTENARY Commemoration Committee Ship Model Competition.”Smaller plan: heading “LOCH ARD: LINES, DECKS and DETAILS”; initials “P.A.W. 10/77”. Larger plan: heading “LOCH ARD: SAIL and RIGGING PLAN”; initials “P.A.W. 10/77”; label “LOCH ARD CENTENARY Commemorative Committee Ship Model Competition”. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, loch line, loch ard, captain gibbs, eva carmichael, tom pearce, glenample station, mutton bird island, loch ard gorge, ship model plans, loch ard model plans, sailing ship, loch ard centenary
