The bridge is not definitively identified, but is of similar construction style to other bridges built in rural areas around this time. Circa 1930”s and may be Ryders Bridge (Old Tawonga Bridge) which crosses the Kiewa River on Mountain Creek Rd Tawonga The first Tawonga bridge was built in 1884- destroyed by floods in 1916. New bridge constructed 1923 and destroyed in 1953. Present concrete bridge constructed in 1986 and named Ryders Bridge These wooden bridges were the only method for transporting stock and produce to market, transporting timber to the mills, sending and receiving mail and for local people to cross the many rivers in the area to go about their daily business. 1- Black and white photograph is glued onto heavy cardboard, which is yellowing with age. Top right hand corner has a tear in the cardboard. Photograph depicts a wooden bridge on wooden piles with 2 white wooden railings along the length of both sides. 2- Original photo has been digitally enlarged to show a gentleman in a light coloured suite and wearing riding boots leaning on the rails of the bridge. This photograph was taken by Nicholas John Caire between 1878 and 1904. Nicholas John Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 Nicholas John Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies, and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria. nicholas john caire, marysville, victoria

This 97km Bairnsdale to Orbost extension through rugged terrain was reputed to have been the most difficult rail project undertaken in Victoria. This wooden bridge was one of the unique railway bridges of the East Gippsland Railway line. Mundic Creek Bridge is of unique design because the line crosses at a very sharp angle. This bridge like many others on the line have "disappeared". This one, probably because of a bushfire.The Bairnsdale to Orbost rail line contains the most varied range Of timber & timber composite bridges on any Victorian line. This photograph is a record of that.
