The Mt Beauty theatre was located in the community hall and gave residents access to the latest movies when television was just beginning to be a popular household entertainment. The Kiewa valley was for a very long time 'out of range' for television reception . Going to the theatre was popular for all age groups.This program shows that most of the films were suitable for the whole family.Mt Beauty entertainment consisted of going to the pictures on a Wednesday or Saturday night. Most films were suitable for the whole family and were up-to-date movies with well known stars. Owen 'Doc' Matthews is remembered for his spectacular Grand Prix dressage exhibitions with his horse Aintree Boy, performed to music under spotlights at Melbourne Royal Show from 1965-1975. He also performed at smaller country shows. Doc Matthews was born in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in 1923, during the Great Depression. He and his brother Paddy were placed in a foster home and then in a Geelong orphanage before being put to work at a dairy farm. Doc was given an elderly piebald mare to ride, which ignited his passion for horses. When he was 16, he enlisted in World War 2 but captured by the Japanese and ended up working on the Burma Railway, spending years as a prisoner of war in the notorious Changi Prison. Doc joined Victoria Police in 1952 and by 1962 was chief horse master and riding instructor in the mounted branch. He drilled teams to perform musical rides and horses and riders were always turned out to perfection. Doc and Aintree Boy became a partnership after the horse had been used in the mounted branch for four years. Doc decided to try his hand at dressage and as there were few instructors, trained Aintree Boy with nothing to go by but a couple of books and film of a single dressage competition. Owen 'Doc' Matthews was truly a pioneer of Grand Prix dressage in Australia. ( ref. Between 8th and 10th June there were celebrations in England celebrating the first anniversary of the end of WWII. Similar celebrations were held in Australian towns and cities.Pennant produced for the Victory Day Celebrations, June 10th, 1946. This triangular pennant is made from a dark blue wool felt cloth with two loops attached to the fly. The pennant is marked with insignia and wording associated with the first anniversary 'V' day celebrations in 1946.Inscribed with a large, white letter V with "victory" in side and in red lettering, surrounded by a "laurel" wreath. The lady cutting the cake is Billie Sims, who was president of the Melbourne Widows Club in the early 1990s. Certificate - Order of Knights, Epworth Press, Charter Belgrave Junior Court of the Mountains No 48
The Methodist Order of Knights was the official youth organisation of the Methodist Church of Australasia. It originated in Hurstville, NSW, on the 4th October 1914 by the then Mr and later Rev Alex Bray. Alex Bray was a Sunday School teacher and spoke to his class of the Knights of the Round Table. In 1917 the Order of Knights was officially recognised by the Sunday School Dept of the NSW Methodist Conference. Courts spread thoroughout Australia. In 1927 the High Court of NSW called for designs for a badge and in 1929 the General Conference of the Methodist Church of Australasia recognised the Order as an approved Organisation. In 1938 the Senior Section was organised into Degrees of Sincerity, Service and Sacrifice; the Junior Section into Pages' Degree with advancement to Esquire. In 1954 the Junior Section was reorganised into two groups: Pages 8 to 11 years and Esquires 12 to 15 years. The Knight's Motto: "Live Pure, Speak True, Right Wrong, Follow Christ the King, else wherefore born?" Courts of the Order: General Conference Department of the Christian Education - General Court - Provincial High Court - District Court - Local Court - Senior Court - Intermediate Court - Junior Court . Regalia: All members of the Intermediate and Senior Courts wore regalia consisting of a cloth shield superimposed by a cross of light and dark blue ribbons, and supported by a cloth collar. Esquire and Degree of Sincerity regalia: White collar and white shield. Degree of Service regalia: Green collar and shield. Degree of Sacrifice: Scarlet collar and shield. District Court regalia: Blue collar and gold shield. High Court regalia: Gold collar and purple sheild. General Court regalia: Purple collar and shield. Officers of the local courts wore their symbols as part of their regalia. Order of Knights Charter for the Methodist Church of Australasia Order of Knights. The Charter is for Belgrave Court of the Mountains. It is dated 10th April 1933 and is signed by Harold V Carroll, Knight Grand Commander and A Vincent Ballard, Governor. Photos from a 10th anniversary of the Home and Hospital Visiting Group of the Melbourne Legacy widows' club at Legacy House in 1991. One photo shows Kath Mitchell, Vera Paydon and Valerie Parr (left to right) cutting the anniversary cake. The visiting group was formed to visit women in hospital or their homes or nursing homes. They met every third Wednesday at Legacy House. The photo was featured in the November 1991 issue of The Answer. In the 1990s Legacy was supported by generous donations from Fergusson Plarre Bakehouse with cakes often donated for the annual fete. This cake could have been donated. It was in a folder of photos from 1990-1993.A record of the importance of the Hospital Visiting group as an important function the widows performed with their desire to help each other, that their 10th anniversary was celebrated. The 10th Australian Light Horse (VMR) was raised from companies of the pre-federation Victorian Mounted Rifles mainly in the Gippsland area of Victoria. In 1912 it was renumbered 13th Light Horse with the motto Loyal till Death and the territorial title Gippsland. Following World War One the regiment retained its number, title and motto. The regiment trained as a cavalry regiment till August 1940, when it converted from horse to mechanised initially as 13th Motor Regiment then 13th Armoured Regiment. It trained in Victoria and, as the Japanese threat to the mainland declined, was disbanded in October 1943 with men going to other units.Collar badge of the 13th Light Horse (Gippsland) Regiment. The first meeting to form an Agricultural society in Orbost was convened by the then Orbost Progress Association and held in the Mechanics Hall on Saturday, 10th October 1891. Its first show was held on 3rd March 1904...on a site alongside the Bonang Road where the present Golf Club stands. It is currently held at the Recreation Reserve at Newmerella. Leather, luggage straps and labels c1916, 20thC
Leather straps were commonly used to secure cases and other forms of luggage when traveling. The labels enabled easy identification when collecting luggage from transport carriages, coaches, buses and trains. 10th Field Company, Australian Engineers WW1 1914-18. The 10th Brigade was an infantry brigade of the Australian Army. Originally formed in 1912 as a Militia formation, the brigade was re-raised in 1916 as part of the expansion of the Australian Imperial Force following the end of the Gallipoli campaign. It subsequently saw service on the Western Front in France and Belgium during the First World War. After the war it was disbanded but was re-raised in 1921 as a part-time formation based in the state of Victoria.
