Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. 6 RAR 2nd Tour 1969 to 1970. Battle of Binh Ba 6th to 8th June 169. In their second tour, the Battalion fought the Battle of Binh Ba. The village of Binh Ba was located approximately six kilometres north of 1 ATF. It had been occupied by a large enemy force, later identified as the 1st Battalion of the 33 NVA Regiment which was guided by the local Binh Ba guerrilla VC unit. Following an initial assault by D Company (phase 1) a further infantry sweep (phase 2) supported by tanks and armoured personal carriers, engaged in close quarter fighting for the remainder of the day. The battle raged from house to house with an intensity rarely equalled during any period of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. By the end of the day, the enemy had suffered heavy causalities and were defeated. 5RAR was awarded a Battle Honour for this action. Operation Broken Hill was by the 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (7RAR), in June 1967 near Binh Ba within the Phuoc Tuy Province of South Vietnam. It involved search-and-clear missions during which Australian troops detained several Vietnamese civilians for questioning and secured areas of the province. A large information board describing the 1st and 2nd tours of 2RAR. A large coloured image in the centre of the board, shows seven soldiers in a field. To the right of the board are four black and white images. To the right of the board is the Roll of Honour to the many soldiers who lost their lives in Vietnam.2 RAR: This photo was taken by Elvon King of Delta Company in September of 1967. This photo was chosen without the knowledge of the historical significance of the shot, which proved to be very momentous. For within a very short time (about 30 seconds) of the photo being taken a wayward rocket from a U.S. gunship landed amongst this group of men in the photo, resulting in three of them being killed and fourteen being wounded. Elvon King was one of the wounded. The three men in the photo are left to right Dennis (Dave) Enright who lost a foot in the incident. Harry Leggett who received shrapnel wounds, and Stan Radomi who was killed outright. A very poignant moment in time. these thoughts about the incident from Wally Musgrave was one of those severely wounded at the time. What could have been a sunny afternoon at a Newcastle or Bondi Hotel or beer Garden..... After what could have been a week of patrolling, it was back inside the wire to scrub up and top up on fluids. Next morning, at 9.00, we went out side of the wire for a fire power, demonstration to satisfy a visiting General. The sun was shining, no seating, grass wasn't cut but we were young and so we thought bullet proof. then someone asked for the old Iroquois gun ship which had been firing rockets at a dead tree to be swung around to fire rockets over our heads. Why?? I haven't given "why" that much thought, but the 1 metre long port side rocket tumbled down amongst us and I'm sure everyone who was there can close their eyes and still see it today. This tumbling rocket landed where these three mates were standing amongst 11 and 12 platoon's young soldiers, chatting in the sun, then we were sailing through the air. I didn't see the devastation myself. I was under bodies. As first Dust-off priority we were off to 36 Evacuation Hospital at Vung Tau. There were two do's, one to the Morgue and one at the Hospital. Lucky me, I went through the hospital door. Eight major operations at once. Three dead, fourteen wounded and nothing on record!! Yeah it was a lovely Sunny Day at Nui Dat., we'll leave it at that! 1789 Corporal Walter Thomas West was recommended for Military Medal 13th May 1917. Citation: For conspicous gallantry in action at the Hindenburg Line on 3rd May 1917. When he attacked with few bob=mbers an enemy post using MG fire against the right brigade. Having taken up the post he moved down the first trench and with 6 men engaged an enemy party who were resisting the 2nd attack of the tight brigade. Recommended by GOC 6th Australian Infantry Brigade. Lieutenant Walter Thomas West was recommended for MC 21st Ocrober 1918. Citation: During the attack on Montebrehain, east of Peronne on 5th Ocober, 1918, Lt West acted in a skilful and courageous manner when his platoon was held up by an enemy strong post, he rushed forward alone under heavy machine gun fire, threw a bomb at the post and captured the gun and crew of three. Later his flank was being held up by a strong post manned by the German guns in cemetary. Lt. West crawled round to the right and rushed the post. One ran he killed 3 of the nemy and took 3 prisoners. The men in the other post ran off with their gun and so escaped. Throughout the day he led his platoon with skil and when the company commander was killed assumed charge and supervised the consolidation of the line with great activity and courage. In 1941-42, Archie Campbell was a lieutenant in the 'Sparrow Force' the 300 men of the 2/2nd Independent Company in a 14-month campaign of ambushes and hit-and-run tactics which effectively pinned down more than 15,000 Japanese troops in East Timor. This book recounts the bloodless Australian landing in Portuguese East Timor, military actions against the Japanese, and eventual evacuation to Darwin. Central to Campbell's experience is the ambush and execution of a section from his platoon, shortly after the Japanese landing in Dili. In 1973, Archie returned to East Timor to meet Barana, the East Timorese man who, as a 12-year-old boy, helped and protected him during the campaign. Each Timorese boy who helped a commando and guarded him while he slept, was called that commando's Criado. Ken White accompanied Archie in the 1973 journey to East Timor to find Barana. Lance Corporal Shoebridge and Lance Corporal Bryan supporting Private Riik and Private Birtles securing weapons. Resulting from a booby trap explosion, 7 members of C Company 8 platoon were wounded when ascending the Nui Thi Vai mountain on the 8th Oct 1966. Overcoming difficult terrain, C Company prepared a landing zone (LZ) on the slopes for evacuation of the wounded - (Medevac). Under a coloured photograph of soldiers reads; 5 RAR - Bush Bashing 1966. Members of C Company 9 platoon after days of bush bashing - a soldier's term used to describe days of navigating dense terrain and vegetation while being always at the ready for enemy contact. Under a coloured photograph of APC reads: 5 RAR - Operation Hayman 8th to 12 November. Armoured Personnel carriers supporting 5 RAR during staging/forming mode prior to being air-lifted on to the summit of Nui Nua on Long Son Island. The Battalion's objective was to capture or eliminate the Chau Duc District VC Company that had been restricting movements of the local regional force. Thirteen Viet Cong survived and surrendered days later to mainland police. Under a coloured photograph of soldiers walking on a log over water reads: 5 RAR - Hat Bands. The Viet Cong occasionally wore the same or similar headgear as the Australian forces in an attempt to create confusion when contact was made. In the short term this was remedied by threading a coloured ribbon around the Australian bush hat. The ribbon served as an identification marker so as to quickly identify an Australian soldier from the enemy. This item was donated by Pte Stanley William Exon (3791206) who was a National Serviceman with the Royal Australian Army Service Corps. He served in Vietnam with 2 Transport Platoon RAASC from April 1968 to January 1969.A coloured photograph in a black/brown frame with a white matt. There is a convoy of eight MK V International Cargo Trucks. The first truck has the number plate (ARN) 171 596 on it as well as the number 24 on the drivers door. At the front of there truck in white is the number 33 and on a yellow circle the number 12 in black. There are several soldiers on top of some of these vehicles.
