The police department refused to fund the cement for its section of High Street, north of the railway line, which included the police station and the courthouse. The then licensee of the Terminus Hotel offered to provide the cement for sealing the footpath in front of the police station and courthouse. This offer was made on the condition that tiles bearing the words Terminus Hotel be inserted into the footpath pointing toward the hotel. The police objected but the hotel licensee, Tex Bailey, won the day. As a result, his hotel’s tiled name was inserted into the footpath in front of the police station. Cr Mick Martin’s son, Des, wrote to the council in 1967 asking that the sign be preserved and it was moved to the Terminus Hotel and placed in the footpath there. The Terminus Hotel was one of the earliest hotels in Wodonga with clear links to the establishment of the railway line. It was an important business and meeting place for social gatherings. The name, Terminus Hotel worked into the brickwork of the footpath when they were surfaced by sustenance workers during the 1930s Depression. Following their deaths in the 1930s, the School became the recipient of two important bequests that were to lead to the establishment in perpetuity of the following student scholarships: firstly, the Frank Pinkerton scholarship valued at £30 per annum for three years and free tuition in architecture, metallurgy, applied chemistry, mining, electrical, mechanical or civil engineering-and secondly, the Martha K. Pinkerton art scholarship of the same value, 'for talented and deserving students from the City and District of Ballarat'. In the early 1930's Martha, who was a past student at the SMB Art and Technical School, began to give a succession of practical donations to the institution which commenced during the Depression years. Thereafter, for approximately a decade until her early death, she continued to donate £50 annually to assist with the payment of the fees of students at the Technical Art School who were experiencing financial difficulties.women of note, ballarat school of mines, martha pinkerton, bequests, frank pinkerton, scholarships, technical art school, art student, bequests in perpetuity, 1930s, depression years, payment of fees financial difficulties -

She is an ardent advocate for the use of local history records to tell Victorian and Australian history from a grassroots perspective. Michele’s MA thesis, ‘A forgotten “Father” of Federation: Sir John Quick 1852‑1911’ (2003), and her PhD thesis, ‘Survivors, schemes, Samaritans and shareholders: the impact of the Great Depression on Bendigo and District 1925‑1935’ (2007), both drew heavily on Bendigo and district records. Michele Matthews Collection: PHD Research - Relief during the great depression This item includes the following document: 8672.38a The letter to the Mayor and Councillors of Bendigo is a request for relief from unpaid council rates by residents of the Sutton Ward. The writers explain that: They are ratepayers seeking permission to work off their outstanding rates by undertaking whatever work the council has available. If they cannot clear the entire debt through work, they ask to be allowed to do at least some work to reduce the amount owed. The appeal is based on their financial hardship and unemployment. The document also includes details of individual applicants, including notes such as: W. W. Bennetts – unemployed for over two years, with five dependants. C. G. Smith, of 17 Curnow Street, Golden Square. T. R. Phillips, 44 Webster Street, unemployed for three years. The letter is signed "Yours faithfully, W. W. Bennetts." Overall, the document is a Great Depression-era petition illustrating the severe economic hardship experienced by unemployed residents, who asked the Bendigo Council to let them repay their local taxes through manual labour rather than cashbendigo, michele matthews collection, 1930s depression, letters seeking support in bendigo during the great depression 1932 to 1934 -

Michele Matthews Collection: PHD Research - Relief during the great depression This item includes the following document: 8672.87a This file contains a series of letters documenting an application for charitable assistance on behalf of Mrs. M. Sheen of Bendigo during 1933–1934. The correspondence follows the request from its initial referral through investigation and final resolution by local welfare authorities. The first letter, dated 11 December 1934, is from the State Relief Committee in Melbourne to the Public Assistance Committee in Bendigo. The Committee forwards Mrs. Sheen's application for assistance and asks local authorities to investigate her circumstances. They request advice on whether the case can be managed locally or whether financial assistance should be provided by the State Relief Committee. Attached is a handwritten appeal from Mrs. Crane, who describes visiting the Sheen family and finding them in severe poverty. She explains that the family has four children and lacks even the most basic necessities, including adequate clothing and bedding. The children reportedly have insufficient clothing to attend school, and the family possesses only a single worn blanket. Mrs. Crane asks whether clothing, materials for sewing, or other practical assistance can be provided rather than simply financial aid, believing this would better meet the family's immediate needs. The next stage of the correspondence shows that the Mayor of Bendigo acknowledges Mrs. Crane's request and arranges for the Sheen family to receive relief through the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. Mr. Pool, the head of the household, is instructed to attend the asylum so assistance can be organised. Subsequent memoranda between the Town Clerk, the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum, and the State Relief Committee confirm that the case has been investigated locally. The Superintendent of the Benevolent Asylum reports that Mrs. Sheen has now been adequately supplied with the clothing her family required and recommends that no further assistance from the State Relief Committee is necessary. The final document records the clothing issued to the family. Items supplied include singlets, girls' singlets, boys' singlets, boys' trousers, shirts, flannelette garments, boots, and shoes. This inventory demonstrates that the response focused on providing essential clothing for the children, addressing the specific deficiencies identified in the original appeal.bendigo, michele matthews collection, 1930s depression, letters seeking support in bendigo during the great depression 1932 to 1934 -

Michele Matthews Collection: PHD Research - Relief during the great depression This item includes the following document: 8672.88a The document is a letter dated 30 October 1935 from the Town Clerk to Mr. A. E. Cook, M.L.A., State Parliament House, Melbourne. It explains that an exceptionally cold and wet winter caused demand for government-supplied firewood to rise well above normal. As a result, the available quota of wood distributed to unemployed people in Bendigo had already been exhausted, and no further supplies were expected to be available for several weeks. The Town Clerk states that the additional wood already distributed had been issued in good faith to deserving recipients who were in need. He asks Mr. Cook to make representations to the Sustenance Department so that authority can be granted for an additional supply of firewood. If the request is approved, the Town Clerk undertakes to coordinate with the local Forestry Offices to regulate future distributions more effectively and ensure that adequate supplies are available before the following winter. The letter concludes by acknowledging that maintaining supplies until more wood becomes available would require a significant reduction in current distributions. The Town Clerk therefore requests that, if possible, an extra allocation of firewood be authorised, stressing that such assistance would be greatly appreciated by the community. The letter is signed "Yours faithfully, Town Clerk."bendigo, michele matthews collection, 1930s depression, letters seeking support in bendigo during the great depression 1932 to 1934 -

It proved to be a useful piece of furniture as the family moved around Australia during various postings within the Australian States and Territories. In World War II, Warren Trestrail embarked with the first convoy of soldiers from Australia to the Middle East and served as Salvation Army welfare officer through the Libyan campaign, at Tobruk, and in Greece. In 1942, it was announced that Salvation Army war services at Darwin would be placed under his direction. He had previously been in charge of South Australian war activities. The item was donated to the Society in 2001 by Sadie Trestrail, who had been a teacher at Kew East Primary School for many years. It is a fine example of vernacular furniture made of recycled materials .Depression-era toolbox constructed from recycled kerosene tins and parts of wooden packing boxes. The five tin drawers are made of sections of kerosene tins with handles soldered to the centre of each new drawer. A number of drawers have separators constructed of tin or aluminium. The wooden planks encasing the the drawers are covered with a degraded shellac coating. An analysis of the interior indicates that the brand names of the original parts are largely extant. furniture - recycled - depession era - 1930s, great depression - 1930s - australia, warren trestrail, salvation army, vernacular furniture -
