This ledger contains outward correspondence from the Shire of Warrnambool, Engineer from the period November 1935 to September 1937. It covers matters such as bridges, roads noxious weeds, drainage. It contains areas such as Wangoom Nirranda, Childers Cove, Hopkins Falls, Panmure and local names such as Jenkins, Holloway, Delaney, Davidson, Digby, Bennett, Kruger, McDowall. Framed portrait of Thomas Marks who was President of the Association for the Advancement of the Blind 1900, 1935-1937. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the VAF Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Mr Marks sits at a table, wearing black tails and pants, a white pleated dinner shirt and black evening dress bow-tie. One hand rests next to a cup and saucer, the other rests on his lap. Tom Marks was educated at the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind. He was a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of the Blind (now Vision Australia) at its establishment in 1895. He went on to serve as President of organisation in 1900 and was later appointed as a part time paid secretary – an office he occupied from 1904 to 1927. He again served as President from 1935 to 1937 during which time he celebrated his 80th birthday. As the living conditions of many blind people were deplorable at this time – they were often confined to a room or shed without any social contacts – it was realized that support for blind persons was needed to serve as a refuge for the oppressed, a home for the indigent, a rest home for the sick and a convalescent home to provide both respite care and permanent accommodation. Mr Marks had a reputiation of having good contacts and being able to use people with more knowledge than himself. An able musician, Tom Marks was often employed in the homes of wealthy families. As a result he met Mr and Mrs Grimwade who were already supporters of Vision Australia. They organized a gymkhana to raise money for the nucleus of a building fund. From this time Tom Marks was involved in the finances of the centres at Brighton, Ballarat and Bendigo, which were the ultimate result of the fund. This 1935 Coronation medal was awarded to individuals for distinguished Citizenry. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the coronation of King George V, a commemorative medal awarded to citizens who had made contributions to their community, as recognised by their local council. The silver medal has the profile of the King and Queen Mary on the front, in their crowns and robes. Around the edge in raised letters is written 'George V and Queen Mary May VI MCMXXXV'. On the reverse are the letters GRI (Georgius Rex Imperator) in the centre, with the outline of a crown directly above the letters and the words 'May 1910' and 'May 1935' written either side of GRI. A red ribbon with blue and white edging attaches the medal to a pin. 1937 Coronation medal was awarded to individuals for distinguished Citizenry. The Valley Worsted Mills were established in 1924 on Swanston Street in South Geelong and quickly grew to become the largest and most modern textile mill in Australia, employing roughly 500 workers at its peak. Built out of distinctive red Geelong brick with iconic Art Deco white trimmings and a sawtooth roofline, the massive 11-acre complex served as a major manufacturing cornerstone during the height of the region's historic wool boom. The mill operated at high production for nearly 50 years before merging with John Foster & Son in December 1973, subsequently closing down entirely in the mid-1970s. This item was donated to RANZCOG's historical collection by Dr Ian Cope. In 1958, Dr Cope moved into rooms at 233 Macquarie Street, Sydney, which had previously been occupied by Dr Dame Constance D'arcy. He subsequently donated much of the material which remained in those rooms to the College. V2A, produced by Krupp (see third scalpel in this box), was the first commercially produced non-rusting steel. It was patented in 1912. (Montanstahl) Sir Robert Wade (1874-1954) was an orthopaedic surgeon. He was a Foundation Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS), and President of RACS 1935-1937. He was also President of the State (NSW) branch of the British Medical Association, and inaugural president of the orthopaedic section of the Australian Medical Congress.Metal tin containing three scalpels. Section of sticking plaster attached to lid of tin carries hardwriting which reads 'SIR ROBT. WADE/SCALPELS/TO BE SHARPENED'. Traces of an manufacturers label printed on the lid of the tin are visible beside the sticking plaster, resembling an Allen and Hanburys label. The first scalpel is engraved 'J.GRAY & SON/SHEFFIELD' near the base of the handle on one side, with a parital and unreadable engraving relating to a Sydney instrument maker on the other side. The second scalpel is very thin and narrow and is engraved with the text 'ALLEN&HANBURYS LONDON' on one side of the handle. Wooden walking cane believed to have been owned and used by Tom Marks, one of the founding members for the Association for the Advancement of the Blind. He became President in 1900 and served again in the post from 1935 to 1937. Mr Marks's ability to network provided the Association with funds and advice for many years, and he was also fulfilled the position of Secretary for 23 years (1904-1927).
