This item was donated by Colin Laurence Grey OAM. Colin was the driving force behind many of the displays at the National Vietnam Veterans Museum. He will be remembered for his expertise, and boundless enthusiasm for all things Australian. Colin organised teams of like-minded souls to bring home and restore many important historical aircraft. His success has been recognised and rewarded with an Order of Australian Medal 2000, and he is named in the Worldwide Who’s Who 2014-2015. Colin’s skills as an engineer, tool maker, boiler maker and organiser enabled him to restore steam trains, trucks, tanks, infantry weapons, various aircraft including a MIG-15 jet fighter and his largest project the Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber. He even replicated two dinosaur skeletons for Museum Victoria. In 1989 Colin joined the fledgling B-24 Liberator Memorial Fund as Project Manager/Restoration Co-Ordinator with the task to build a volunteer organisation that could find the AUD$10m required, source parts and materials for the largest aircraft restoration in Australia. The B-24 program had 10 volunteers, 60 sponsors and an international support network that provided parts, tooling, aviation equipment and political support. Colin’s combined engineering, academic and logistical skills provided the basis for advancing the skills of a very disparate group of volunteers form all walks of life. Colin established links with Centrelink, Corrections Victoria, RMT Uni and the ADF to develop the skills base of many less fortunate individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Colin’s work in this area gained him an AOM (2000). He featured in an ABC Australian Stories program and was awarded a life membership of the organisation. Colin was a founding member and President of the Oceania Aviation Museum Inc. which was instrumental in the historic listing of the joint WW2 USAAC/RAAF facility at Werribee and the Preserve Point Cook Aerodrome Group. Colin developed best practice engineering and fund-raising programs for a volunteer group, the Phillip Island Aquatic Centre. Colin’s constant learning, curiosity, passion and contribution to all things Australian have been an inspiration and a great example to all of us. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.Inside a manilla envelope which has a cut out window. through the window on yellow cardboard you can see the RAAF insignia. p.258.non-fictionSaigon,1967. Fresh-faced 25-year-old Hugh Lunn arrives in Vietnam at the height of the war to cover it for Reuters and quickly meets a fascinating cast of characters: journalists, Vietnamese, military and best of all, Dinh, the Vietnamese reporter and guide who spoke his own brand of English (Dinglish) and whose wisdom and humour become inextricably bound up with the young reporter's view of the war. Before long the author experiences the full horror and tragedy of war, and finds himself questioning not only the US/Australian role in Vietnam, but his own role in a war where images and words could be as powerful as bullets. vietnam conflict 1961-1975 - personal recollections, vietnam conflict 1961-1975 - history

This dress belonged to Brighton local Paula Folks, who wore it to her niece's wedding at St John's, Toorak in 1970. It also bears a second connection to Brighton through the label, Elegance, a Flinders Lane fashion house co-owned by Rudy Brill and Brighton resident Robert Salter. Paula was a longtime manager and owner of Pearl's Boutique, a well-known local fashion boutique established by Elsebe Wilhelmine Wills and Pearl Murray in 1965. The two friends had grown up together in Horsham, and decided to go into business together after reading in Fashionweek that women in their thirties, forties, fifties and older had trouble finding young-looking styles. Setting out to fill this gap in the market, they established a store at 240 St Kilda Street, near the Brighton Yacht Club, with Elsebe handled the buying while Pearl fronted the shop. They moved to 40 Church Street, Brighton in 1967. Paula joined the business as a manager in 1968, became a partner in 1971 and took over from the original owners in 1988. When she closed the boutique in 2005, she donated a number of garments to Brighton Historical Society. Reflecting fondly on her 38 years at Pearls, she told The Age, "I have enjoyed all my days here because people are special to me. I love fashion. It's been a pleasure to dress people, to make them look good and feel pleased with themselves."Cream terylene chiffon dress with all-over daisy appliqués. ill. p.258.non-fictionRails Across Australia is an album of photographs taken by David Cable, a well-regarded British author of several albums of train pictures throughout the world. The photos were taken initially during the period between 1967 and 1973 when David lived in Adelaide, and then during several visits around the Commonwealth during the twenty-first century. The photos cover a wide variety of trains in the mainland states, from Queensland to the Pilbara region of Western Australia, and include pictures showing trains in the landscapes, as well as close-up photos of locomotives for the modelling enthusiasts. The well-known problems of different gauges originally established in the various states are illustrated by the individual classes designed for them, in addition to the newest designs for the standard gauge tracks now linking them.railroad trains -- australia -- history -- pictorial works., railroad trains -- australia -- history.

Index, ill, maps, p.258.non-fictionThe covert war General Douglas MacArthur waged against Japanese forces in the Pacific arena was the largest undercover operation ever undertaken. Here, for the first time, is the complete story of the legendary exploits and heroism of the thousands of courageous individuals who fought as spies, guerrillas, propagandists, and saboteurs behind enemy lines. In an action-packed narrative, MacArthur's Undercover War tells of thrilling feats of valor and derring-do - impossible missions to blow up harbors, kidnap heads of state, undermine currency, and arrange prison escapes, all deep within enemy territory. Firsthand interviews with veterans and information from previously unpublished documents reveal a riveting tale of World War II that has never been fully told. world war 1939-1945 - campaigns - south west pacific, douglas macarthur 1880-1964

Mountains and loughs are the homes of gods and goddesses, of saints and monsters, and pattern, beauty and cyclical logic are revealed in their stories. Michael Dames, whose previous works have won him a wide and enthusiastic following, has walked through each.1. spirituality, 2. irish myths.
