Engraved on the platter is "Winner VICTORIAN TAXI DRIVER OF THE YEAR - 1989". David Gawthorn was a spokesperson for the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria. As a taxi driver, he was aware that many people with arthritis rely on taxis due to problems with mobility. He felt that it was important to show them courtesy and consideration as it would make life easier for them. Mr Gawthorn was presented with the award at a Gala Dinner held at the Hilton Hotel in July 1989. The award was a joint initiative between the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria, the Victorian Taxi Association, and the Roads Corporation. It was also sponsored by 3MP radio station and the Hilton on the Park. A cropped version of this photo appears on page 11 of the vol 2 No 4, November 1989 issue of the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria's quarterly magazine, Arthritis Update.
