The letter is mostly about the training for and the raid which was carried out by a large group made up from the 37th and 38th Battalions AIF on the 27th February 1917. The raid which only lasted some 35 minutes was very successful and was known as the “Armentieres Raid”. Suggett was part of the raid. And It's badly wanted at the officers' mess of the Royal Australian Artillery, 3rd Div., in Batman av., Melbourne. A formal application for It was made, In writing, to the Art Gallery by Brigadier W. Hall, commanding offlfncer. But Art Gallery members at their meeting yesterday said "No." Lending it or giving it away would "create a dan- gerous precedent for the Gallery," they decided. . "Any anyway," said Mr. W. Little, the Gallery's curator, "Brig. Hall has erred in thinking the men depicted in the painting are artillerymen. "They're offlfflcers In the Duke of Connaught's Light Infantry." There is some confusion to it, possibly 234 in the 8th Light Horse Regt. Embarked for Egypt 25.2.1915 then Gallipoli 16.5.1915. Hospitalised with dysentery 7.8.15 then diagnosed as gastroenteritis. Embarked for Australia 16.10.1915 classed as enteric fever. Classed fully fit he embarked for England 7.9.1916 as No 26673 in 3rd reinforcements 8th FA Brigade. Transferred to 1st Div Ammunition Column 23.3.1917, mustered as Driver 4.7.1917. WIA 6.10.1917 with GSW's to left thigh, right knee, shoulder and arm severe. Discharged from the AIF 29.8.1918. Leslie Royce served in the Army (VX22256) enlisting on, 05/06/1940 in Ballarat, VIC before being discharged from duties with the 2/12 FLD REGT as a Army Non-Commissioned Sergeant (SGT) on 14/01/1946.
