A.I.F....British War Medal WW1 Medal British War Medal WW1 2246 Pte Clive Terril Rowe 46-BN. AIF ...2246 Pte, Clive Terril Rowe Born Melbourne. Enlisted 17th March 1916 in Sale Victoria, aged 18 years 5 months Pte. Rowe went from the 19th Depot Battalion to the 46th Battalion AIF. Departed Australia 16th August 1916 and returned to Australia 8th April 1919. He was discharged 15th June 1919. While overseas Pte. Rowe suffered trench feet, was wounded (shellshock) and chronic eczema. Pte. Rowe was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.British War Medal 1914-1920 Instituted by King George V in 1919 to mark the end of WW1 and record the service given.The circular medal is made of cupro nickel with the effigy of George V on the obverse. Around this are the words GEORGIVS V BRITT. OMN:REX ET IND:IMP: The reverse image has St. George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers and a skull and crossbones, the emblem of death. Above this is the risen sun of victory. The years 1914 and 1918 are contained on the outside edge of the medal. The ribbon has a wide central watered stripe of orange, flanked by two narrow white stripes which are in turn flanked by two black pinstripes, flanked by two outer stripes of blue. The colours have no particular significance. Along the rim of the medal is stamped 2245 PTE.C.T. ROWE. 46-BN. A.I.F. -

Jacket. black wool. Four pockets held shut with silver buttons. Front held shut with four silver buttons. Each collar has a silver number badge - 1779. Each arm has a cloth badge marked "Corps of Commissionaires". Each arm also has a 75mm round badge with a 7 pointed star. It is surmounted with a crown. Inside the 'star' is a blue ring with the words "Service - Loyalty - Integrity". Inside the blue ring is a red dot. On that dot are symbols - Eagle, Anchor and a Rifle. Ob the left forearm is a 25 mm cloth badge with a silver letter "R". 2. Belt, wool, black. Silver metal buckle. 3. Trousers, woollen, black. 4. Tie, woollen, black. Red liner, fixed loop for neck. 5. Due to the content range of the Albums and local area the collection has been sorted into different categories as much as possible. There are 46 ...Both Albums contain the Thomas & May Staley Collection WW1. Besides photos & postcards there are numerous other cards, articles from Newspapers, certificates covering numbers of people. There are photos re Soldiers with no identification, others with names & Regimental Numbers easily identifiable and can be matched to other photos and postcards. Easily identified are Thomas Staley (served in WW1 & WW2) May Staley (Maiden name “EVERY”) Her 3 brothers Francis, George and Ernest Every. Miss Thomas (Janey) is May Staleys Auntie. George and Ernest served in WW1. Many of the Soldiers come from around the Bendigo area notably White Hills and Epsom. Many are in the same Unit notably the 29th BN AIF. Thomas’s two sons WW2 are in the collection as well. Due to the content range of the Albums and local area the collection has been sorted into different categories as much as possible. There are 46 Catalogue No's, refer Catalogue No 10758.2P for all the collection to come up..1) Album. The front and back covers have newspaper articles glued in, they cover Poetry re the War eg: “A bit of Khaki”, “Here comes a Soldier”, “Bravo Australia”, “The wail of Belgium”, “The Prince of Peace”, “Our fallen heroes”. There are 3 articles re Pte George Every titled, A true Comrade”, “Welcome Home”, “Citizens Welcome”. The majority of the photos were related to WW1. .2) This album has space for 2 photos per page, there are 87postcards in place which relate to holidays in France and England mostly pre WW1.
