Pte Charles F. Richardson 6 Bn AIF was wounded at Gallipoli, and sent to Alexandria where he died in a hospital of his wounds. The certificates were held by the Rogers family. Pte Richardson's sister was the historian Dorothy Rogers. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.Three mounted letters, two identical paying tribute to the sacrifice of Pte Charles F. Richardson 6 Bn AIF in World War I. Each certificate is set within a thin plywood open frame. Private Charles Field Richardson, 6 Bn., AIF, was the brother of the historian Dorothy Richardson. He enrolled in the AIF on 17 August 1914. Before he enrolled he worked as a mechanic in Harry Cooper’s ‘Kew Flyer’ bicycle shop in Cotham Road. His address is recorded on the Embarkation Rolls as 80 Gladstone Street. He embarked for Europe on the HMAT Hororata on 17 August. The Hororata had been fitted out for 2,000 troops and 124 horses. Charles Richardson was to die of wounds in Egypt on 3 May 1915 at the age of 21 and is buried in Alexandria. Formal and official documents such as these, recording sacrifice in the First World War were socially and spiritually significant to the deceased soldier's close relatives. The home made frame emphasises that the Rogers family valued these documents and wanted them presented visually as a group. The documents have added significance locally as Charles Field Richardson was the brother of the historian Dorothy Rogers. The Collection includes postcards that he sent from Alexandria to his sister and photographs of Pte Richardson in uniform and at the pyramids. He was wounded at Gallipoli and died in hospital in Alexandria. The frame holds three documents, two of which, the signed letters from Buckingham palace are identical. The central scroll records Charles Field Richardson’s death and his contribution to King and Country.pte charles field richardson, 6th battalion aif, first world war, rogers collection, documents

Badge board in black frame showing the badges of the Royal Victoria Regiment and the 5th Battalion, Victorian Scottish Regiment on a Gordon tartan backing. Below this is an information panel which includes a summary of important historical information about the 5th Infantry Battalion and its connection to A COY 5/6 RVR. Note: While this object notes the connection between A COY 5/6 RVR and 5th Bn VSR it should be remembered that the RVR is the custodian of the legacy of all Victorian Infantry units. This is therefore not the only historical link of A COY 5/6 RVR which also holds strong links to the 52nd Infantry Battalion (The Gippsland Regiment) who had its HQ located for many years in Dandenong near the current A COY 5/6 RVR depot. While B COY 5/6 RVR is the primary custodian of the VSR historical link, the message of this object is that A COY also has a connection which should be remembered. Information panel reads: 5th Infantry Battalion (Australia) Territorial Title: The 'Victorian Scottish Regiment' (1927-1944 then 1948-1960) Motto: "Mori Quam Fordari - Death before dishonour' (1927-1935), Now 'Nemo Me Impune Lacessit - No one shall provoke me without impunity' (1935-1944 then 1948-) Alliances: The 'Gordon Highlanders' (1930-1994), Then 'The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons, Camerons)' (1994-2006), Now '4" Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland - 4 SCOTS' (2006-) Official Tartan: Gordon Unit Colour Patch: Rectangle - Black over Red Regimental March: Cock of the North (1953-) Anniversary: Formed - 29 August 1898 Honours: Distinction: South Africa 1899-1902.
