... to Miss G. Perry to attend a lunch as a "Miss Bendigo" as ...Gertrude Perry was born in California Gully in 1917. Her singing skills were recognized at an early age. She later sang with local choirs and sang on radio. She was involved with the Bendigo Operatic Society for many years. Gertrude began her working life in sales. After studying book keeping she worked at the Bendigo Ordnance Factory during WW2 and then worked for local solicitors and accountants. Gertrude was involved with many community and sporting organizations.Gertrude Perry Collection - The Star (newspaper) letter and invitation to Miss G. Perry to attend a lunch as a finalist in the "Miss Bendigo" as part of the Bendigo Easter Fair Society on Friday (??) 1935 at one o'clock. ... Correspondence concerning Ruby H. Lonie and Miss Annie A ...Annie Aurelia Jones was born on 22 November 1903 at Buninyong. She was appointed to the staff of the Ballarat School of Mines in 1921 as a Typist and retrenched on 31 December 1922. She was reappointed to the staff on 25 May 1923 as a junior clerk. She retired from the Ballarat School of Mines on 18 July 1962. Annie Jones died on 05 January 1984 at Melbourne, and is buried in Buninyong Cemetery. . Ruby Helen Lonie was born on 09 July 1895 at Ballarat, the daughter of Hugh Lonie of Rothesay, Scotland and Jan McLean from Ballarat. Ruby Lonie was employed on the administrative staff of the Ballarat School of Mines from 1914 to May 1960. She died on 23 December 1979 at Ballarat. The Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report 1935 reported: " I also desire to make special reference to the splendid work performed by Miss R.H. Lonie and Miss A.A. Jones in carrying on the work of the Office during the late Mr Robinson's illness and since his death. The highest praise is due to them for the excellent services they have rendered and I feel very strongly that every effort should be made to obtain a grant from the Department in recognition of the additional services they were called upon to perform."Four typed quarto pages relating to the salary of Miss Ruby Lonie and Miss Annie A. This is a set of four photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment by Miss Victoria on the 19th of April 1986. Her visit was hosted by the CO - LTCOL Don Swiney MBE. Although a list of Miss Victoria former winners is available on-line, the visitor is not identified as it is unclear she was the 1985 or 1986 winner. It is probable the presentation of the certificate in photo .1P was related to a fundraising donation by the unit to Miss Victoria’s charity.This is a set of four photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment by Miss Victoria on the 19th of April 1986. Painted by Edith Alsop. Edith came from a progressive family, and encouraged by their parents, she along with her three sisters, went to Europe to discover contemporary art styles. The University of Melbourne holds an impressive collection of her works. The portrait was unveiled at the school on 2 August 1940. The OLA had agreed to purchase the painting at its AGM held on 20 March 1940. . The inscription reads "Miss Lilian Irving Co-founder 1901-1933". Size 840mm x 670mm. Miss Slovenian Community was selected every year at the Slovenian Association Melbourne. Young girls of Slovenian origin participated and collected donations, used for a known charity in Victoria.White satin sash awarded to the Miss Slovenian Community in 1985 Miss Angelique Van De Laak. She was selected among a group of other young ladies, being of one or two Slovenian parents. Angelique was tragically killed in a car accident years later. Miss Eva Carmichael, the subject of the photograph, was one of only two survivors from the wreck of the Loch Ard, wrecked on Mutton Bird Island near Port Campbell, Victoria, on June 1st, 1878..The photograph holds great significance for its connection to Eva Carmichael, one of two survivors from the wreck of the Loch Ard. It is also significant for its connection to the Loch Ard, one of the most tragic shipwrecks in Victoria's coastline and listed on the Historic Shipwreck Register.Photographic portrait mounted on brown cardboard of Miss Eva Carmichael. Miss Carmichael is standing near an upholstered chair and rests wth both hands upon a masonry pillar. Behind her is a balustrade in the classic style common to that period. The background consists of a large tree giving the impression of a garden setting. It was produced at the studio of Arthur & Son, Mount Gambier, 1878. Inscriptions handwritten below the photograph. In the collection of the Kew RSL (Cotham Road) there is a framed original certificate with information about Lillias Jerram. It includes the following information: Miss Lillias May JERRAM Commandant No. 323 Detachment, Victoria [Citation] Loyal and able leadership and service during World War II Service: Joined No.323 (Kew) Detachment in 1937. Commandant in 1944. Miss Jerram did voluntary duty in casualty and wards at St Vincent's Hospital regularly for 6 years. Also duty at the Eye and Ear Hospital and A.R.P. Duty. Helped No.323 Detachment to raise funds amounting to 400 pounds for St. John Theatre at 115th A.G.H., Heidelberg. Blood donor. Orbost & District Historical Societycalling card, early 1900's
This calling card / visiting card belonged to Jean Munro, the daughter of Donald Munro who was an Orbost Shire Councillor for 20 years. Donald Munro, with his brother, Archie carried on a boot-making business in one of the rooms of a three-storeyed barn at Lochiel. The Munros were musically inclined and through them a band was formed in 1889. Donald Munro was involved in many of the town's activities. (More in Mary Gilbert's Personalities and Stories of the Early Orbost District). Jean Munro was for many years a librarian and was involved in the Presbyterian Church in Orbost. She died in 1934.In the early 20th century when formal introductions were a normal expectation of good manners , the exchange of calling cards was a social custom that was essential in developing friendships. This item reflects a time of when courtesy was an important aspect of society.
