This helmet was worn by Regt No 529 Trooper Alexander Hay Borthwick 8th Light Horse Regiment in the charge at the Nek, Gallipoli, on 7 August 1915. Borthwick was wounded in the charge but remained on duty. Following Gallipoli, Borthwick went on to serve with the 8th Light Horse in Sinai. He was wounded on a second occasion and lost his right arm.A rare object, well provenance, and of major significance to Australian Armoured Corps in general and 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment in particular, being the custodian of the traditions of the 8th Light Horse Regiment through its linking with 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. The helmet is displayed at the annual Nek Dinner held by the 4th/19 PWLH Regiment.Stiffened khaki coloured cloth helmet with folded puggaree. Improving meat production In 1905, the English firm Thomas Borthwick & Son set up operations in Australia. Borthwick was a major meat exporter and ran freezing works as well as having its own cattle stations in Australia. From the early 19th century, Borthwick encouraged the production of quality beef by awarding prizes at agricultural shows throughout Australia. In the early 1950s the Australian Meat Board and The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) also took steps to encourage beef producers. Perpetual Trophy For the Coronation Show in 1953, Borthwick introduced a perpetual trophy. The Borthwick Trophy was awarded to the Fat Cattle Champion with the winner being judged from the best team of three steers under three years old. The winning team was the one that gained the highest aggregate score from both the live and carcase judging. Initially, the relevant winning Breed Society retained the trophy for a year and returned it for the following Royal Melbourne Show but the Borthwick Trophy is now displayed at the Melbourne Royal offices on the Melbourne Showgrounds. (Mandy Bede) The competition is now known as the competition between teams of three purebred steers in the Beef Carcase competition. This plaque commemorated the October 16th, 1965 opening of a new pavilion at Emerald Recreation Reserve (now known as Worrell Reserve). The pavilion was opened by Mr William Archibald Borthwick, at that time a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly representing the electorate of Scoresby. It was built to serve the needs of local sports teams including the Emerald Cricket Club. The 1965 pavilion was replaced in 2021.This plaque commemorates a now-renovated building playing an important role in facilitating sporting and recreation in the local community over more than five decades.A rectangular wooden plaque, with partially faded text painted on one side in a landscape orientation. There are two holes through the display side of the plaque near the middle of each short edge, previously used to affix the plaque to a surface. There is a small taper between the rear side and display side such that the display side is slightly smaller.Painted on wood: "EMERALD RECREATION / RESERVE PAVILION / Opened by / MR. W A.
