This book was awarded to Robert Buchanan (PY1899) in 1898 for second prize in Mathematics Form IV. Robert entered Ballarat College in July 1895 (D.O.B 10/5/1882). Original register notes parent as Mrs. Buchanan residing in Alfredton. Former school is noted as S.S.695 Lower VI.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in black calf with college emblem embossed on front cover, and bordered in gilt. 1st Surrey Hills was the 3rd troop formed in Victoria. Harrison Buchanan was not old enough to join and for a time was the 'troop mascot' as the cubs had not been formed at this time. He later became the troop's 2nd Scoutmaster. Doug Jeffries lived at 12 Vincent Street. Alex Lucas was the son of the draper in Canterbury Road. Gold Fever illuminates Drury Lane walkway entrance to Bridge Street Mall. The multiple metal forms act like mobiles suspended from the wall line out into the centre of the walkway. The flexing motion of the rolled metal and traffic reflectors wrapped on the ends creates movement and reflections in the laneway. This movement follows a pricing graph for gold from 1851 to 2011. This zigzagging golden graph line tells the tale of the gold rush spreading like lightning across the world. Electoral roll records: 1924: Harrison Walter Spare Buchanan (clerk), Amelia Jane Buchanan (HD) and William Tennant Buchanan are listed at 22 Albion Street, known as ‘Brenston’. This and No 24 ‘Thulecroft’ were built in 1907/08 by brothers-in-law Harrison Rotherham & William Buchanan. They used a process new to Melbourne at the time – making concrete bricks for which they used sand from Middlesex Road. Harrison Buchanan, son of William, is the small boy in the photo.
