No 9 Camp was set up at the Wangaratta Showgrounds to allow the formation of the 2/24th Australian Infantry Battalion prior to leaving for Egypt. Major Joseph Albert Wright a WW1 Light Horse veteran was in charge of this platoon the only Aboriginal squad in the Australian Military Forces at that time. By 1970 the original area of 3,500 acres was whittled down to 585 acres and handed over to the Framlingham Aboriginal Trust. Framlingham is today one of only two discrete aboriginal communities in Victoria where aborigines live on aboriginal land and is an important part of the district cultural life. The celebration of the 150th anniversary of Framlingham’s establishment in 2014 was therefore a significant event in the district’s history and the booklet is a permanent reminder of this.This is a small booklet of 8 pages containing information on the 150th celebrations of Framlingham Aboriginal Reserve in 2014. The Wombeetch Puyuun Monument was erected by his friend and Guardian, James Dawson in 1885, largely at his own expense. At the top is engraved 1840, which marked the beginning of the demise of the local First Nations people. Below are a boomerang, a club, and a message stick. At the bottom is the year 1883 which saw the last of the local First Nations people on Country with the death of Wombeetch Puyuun. On the base are the words: "In memory of the Aborigines of this district. Here lies the body of the chief, Wombeetch Puyuun, and the last of the local tribes".
