These two pieces were recovered during excavations at Stokes Hill Wharf, Darwin. Pieces of bomb shrapnel from the Japanese bombing of Darwin.1. This is a cast steel fragment approx 24mm thick. It is roughly triangular shape. It also has irregular curves. The edges are jagged and rough. 2. This is a cast steel fragment. Approx rectangular 24mm thick. It has irregular curves. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. Each photo, black and white, size about 14.5 x 18.5. They are contained in a plastic folder.Typed on top of first photo is:- "Received these photos from an old shipmate on the USS QUAPAW ATF-110. Cologne Cathedral is a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and is a World Heritage Site. It is Germany's most visited landmark, attracting an average of 20,000 people a day. (Wikipedia) Though not targeted itself, the cathedral was very near to the central railway station and suffered fourteen hits by aerial bombs during World War II. Badly damaged, it nevertheless remained standing in an otherwise completely flattened city. The twin spires were an easily recognizable navigational landmark for Allied aircraft bombing deeper into Germany, which may explain why the cathedral was spared. Repairs were completed in 1956. An emergency repair on the northwest tower's base carried out in 1944 using poor-quality brick taken from a nearby ruined building remained visible until 2005 as a reminder of the war, when it was decided to restore the section its original appearance. The 11 Pound Practice Bomb was used in Australia to train air crews both during and after WW2. When the bomb hit the ground it produced a smoke cloud so that the aircrew could see where their bomb had landed. There was only a small explosive charge in them. Cylindrical, finned steel bomb weighing approx. 11lb painted silver with three stripes (blue, yellow, red) painted around the mid-section. One attachment point/loop. Cast iron nose. None.

During the First World War on 8 October 1914, the British Royal Flying Corps (RFC) arrived in Saint-Omer and a headquarters was established at the aerodrome next to the local race course. For the following four years, Saint-Omer was a focal point for all RFC operations in the field. Although most squadrons only used Saint-Omer as a transit camp before moving on to other locations, the base grew in importance as it increased its logistic support to the RFC. Many Royal Air Force squadrons can trace their roots to formation at Saint-Omer during this period. Among which are No. IX Squadron RAF which was formed at Saint-Omer, 14 December 1914 and No. 16 Squadron RAF which was formed on 10 February 1915. When the RAF's legless Battle of Britain ace, Douglas Bader, parachuted from his Spitfire during an aerial battle over France, he was initially treated at a Luftwaffe hospital at Saint Omer.
