AFL Record 1995 Grand FinalFor Carlton it was their 16th Premiership and to date (2019) their last. Carlton defeated Geelong 21.15 (141) to 11.14 (80). The match attendance was 93670. For Carlton the major goal kickers were Captain Stephen Kernahan 5. Greg Williams 5 & Brad Pearce 4. Carlton won 16 games in a row including the Grand Final and since it represented Carlton's 16th Premiership it was dubbed "Sweet Sixteen" Norm Smith medalist (best on ground) was Greg Williams. 1999 AFL Grand Final was a battle between two powerhouse Victorian squads in Carlton and North Melbourne. With North under the supervision of Dennis Pagan, and the elite kicking of Wayne Carey, the blues couldn't keep up with the Roos, and ended up losing 19-10-124, to 12-17-89.

The band held the record for winning the most Victorian State Schools Association Championships between 1931 and 1966. Research by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer: Description: A large group of boys, most of whom are dressed in long trousers and peaked band hats, led by their drum major, prepare to march past a group of women dressed in overcoats and hats and an infant in a pram. In the background is a school shelter shed, a railway line, houses and a netball ring on a wooden stand. The Hyde Street State School Band was formed in 1928 as the school band for Hyde Street State School No. 1912 at 10 Hyde Street Footscray (now Footscray City Primary School). Their bandmaster, Francis Charles Johnston,(1880-1953) nicknamed “Massa” as a boy for his love and admiration of southern American jazz music, also conducted the Victorian Police Band, Collingwood Citizens Band, and the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade Band, amongst others, leading to scores of wins in brass band competitions. Even into his sixties, “Massa” ran three laps around the South Melbourne Oval every morning in order to maintain fitness for his busy conducting schedule. He was a cornetist and horn player, and performed in and lead brass bands for more than fifty years including bands that farewelled Australian troops from the Boer War to the Second World War. The Argus 13 December 1947, described “Massa” - “Bandsmen say he is a genius in brass band music, and the best conductor in the Southern Hemisphere. He still retains the romance and Bohemianism of the old German bandsmen he played with in the streets of Melbourne 50 years ago.” In 1925, a bequest of £10,000 from the estate of the late writer, William Gillies was made to the Education Department of Victoria. It was devoted to three purposes - “1) The encouragement of instrumental music (school bands or orchestras) in the State schools of Victoria, leading, it is hoped, to an increase in the number of village bands and orchestras, and, most important of all, family orchestras; (2) The encouragement of the art of reading aloud, leading, it is hoped, to an increase of the admirable pastime of reading aloud in the family circle; and (3) The encouragement of any branch of nature study, the aim of all three being to make home life, especially in the country, more attractive.” The Director of Education, Mr. M.P. Hansen wrote in his book “Thoughts That Breathe” published in 1932, that, as a result of the Gillies Bequest- “£3,030 has already been made available for the purchase of band instruments, and thanks largely to the encouragement given by this fine bequest, there are now in State schools in Victoria, each under expert tuition, 31 brass bands, 9 orchestras, 13 fife bands and 23 violin classes. That the effect of such work has a significant bearing on the right use of leisure, is undeniable.” By 1937, at least 50 State school bands had been set up in Victoria and the Victorian State Schools Association Championships were hotly contested. Frank quickly and skilfully brought the inexperienced boys of the Hyde Street Brass Band to A grade level, winning their first Victorian State Schools Association Championships in 1931. The band went on to win multiple times, holding the record for winning the most Victorian State Schools Association Championships between 1931 and 1966. The band soon became an integral part of community events. Whenever the Footscray Football Team played a home game at the perpetually blustery Western Oval, (Whitten Oval since 1995) the band performed at half time, marching around the boundary line, belting out the Footscray Football Team theme song- “Sons of the ’Scray” played to the tune of “Sons of the Sea” by British music hall songwriter Felix McGlennon. Volunteers walked behind the band carrying a large tarpaulin to catch the shower of coins thrown by fans from both teams, which helped pay for new instruments, repairs and uniforms. The old footy joke goes- Q. Who played on the wing at the Western Oval for 20 years, but never kicked a goal? A. The Hyde Street Band. Now called the Hyde Street Youth Band Inc, it is a not-for-profit organisation, supported by the City of Maribyrnong. Their aim is to make brass music accessible to young people aged from 5-25 years, by supplying the instruments and lessons for a modest annual membership fee. The traditional British brass band comprises of three musical ensembles according to ability. The Hyde Street Youth Band Inc. play at community events including the AFL Grand Final Parade, ANZAC Day March at the Shrine of Remembrance, Moomba Parade and Yarraville Carols by Candlelight. Rennie Ellis (1940–2003) was as a pivotal figure in Australian visual culture. He was both a documentary photographer and a prominent presence in advertising, television and photography. Ellis was known for his candid documentary images of contemporary Australian life. His photographs of social events, such as music festivals, fashion parades or nightclubs are iconic, but his practice also encompassed the grittier side of life. In his AFL series, Ellis skilfully portrays the nation’s passion for the game, extending his lens beyond the boundary line to showcase the spirited fans alongside the on-field action. In Ellis’ photograph Malcom Fraser, VFL Grand Final 1979 we see a young supporter shake hands with Liberal Prime Minister, Malcom Fraser. In the grand Australian tradition, politicians and PMs are active in the football sphere. This work was shown in the 2017 Counihan Gallery exhibition Leather Poisoning, along with many other works by Ellis capturing the nations love of the game. Arriving to play at Geelong in a blaze of publicity at the age of 27, his participation in the 1962 intra-club practice matches attracted unprecedented spectator interest. Despite suffering a severe knee injury in the opening minutes of his first League match, he immediately demonstrated his wide range of skills. He is regarded as the greatest handpassing exponent in the history of football and was one of the first players to use it as a method of attack. Frequently he achieved distances of 30 to 40 metres with hand passes to team-mates in better position. His ruck work was also quite revolutionary. He developed the technique of leaping for the ball slightly earlier than his opponents and gaining a 'ride' higher into the air. Often he would, in preference to a conventional tap-out, roll the ball down one arm and handpass to a team-mate running past He developed this technique with Bill Goggin in particular. Dear Pa, May you always ring true blue, Love Harry Just thinking about that inscription often brings big Al to tears. The story of the Espie bell has its origins at the old family property at Wandin in the picturesque Yarra Valley, in the days when the Espies’ kids were at the neighboring creek fossicking for local platypus. “If they got too far away we’d ring an old cowbell,” Espie recalled, “and years later, my daughter Jo brought me this replacement bell from some second-hand naval place”. “Not long after Shane (O’Sullivan) asked me to officiate at trade week and that’s when the bell came into vogue.” A permanent fixture at trade week, Espie would ring the bell to signal the opening of trading when club recruiters gathered – initially within the confines of the Carlton Heroes Stand at Visy Park, more recently at Etihad Stadium. In those early days at Carlton he caused a stir as bell ringer, drawing curious responses from officiating journalists, recruiters and coaches alike. “I even remember (Kevin) Sheedy asking me if I was selling muffins,” he recalled. Then, when trade day was relocated to Etihad, Espie’s daughter thought it appropriate to get the bell inscribed. “Because the bell was leaving Carlton, Jo got it inscribed on my grandson’s behalf, because he was only four or five then. When I saw what was inscribed I was tearful,” Espie said. “The bell is very important to me, particularly at this time, because Jo is battling health problems at the moment, my grandson is autistic and she’s fought like hell to get him through.” Espie joined Carlton’s Under 19 committee on the eve of the senior Premiership season of 1979 and managed the club’s junior squads, the Bert Deacon Squad included. “I worked very closely with Geoff Southby, ‘Swan’ McKay and Trevor Keogh when they were coaching the Under 19s and I was recruiting as well,” he said. “In 1981 and ’82 I forward scouted for ‘Parko’ (David Parkin) and later on I did the same for ‘Wallsy’ (Robert Walls). After that I coordinated recruiting in central Victoria and it was nothing for me to do 25,000ks a year in my own car – and I loved every minute of it.” Espie’s passion for Carlton and empathy for its wartime players Bert Deacon, Ollie Grieve and Jack “Chooka” Howell can be sourced to his childhood years. His grandparents lived not far from the old ground on Wilson Street “and that’s how I got in for the ’45 Grand Final”. “My uncle, who had just got back from the war, grabbed a ladder from Wilson Street and set it up against the barbed wire fence at the ground. I climbed the ladder and caught my arm on the barbed wire, but I got over the top and saw the game while I straddled the fence,” Espie said. “What I saw was what you would today call ‘spotfires’ and I reckon it took football 20 years to get rid of it.” Today, Espie continues to ring in the yearly trade talk days at AFL headquarters (with the notable exception of 2012 when he was hospitalized), but he’s in no doubt as to where the bell belongs. “This bell has had nothing to do with Wandin but everything to do with Carlton - and with the 150th year of the club I think the bell stays here (at Visy Park). I still hope to ring the bell for the AFL this year, but at least I’ll know where it is,” Espie said. “I’ve told Jo about this and she tells me Harry’s rapt, because he’s a big Carlton supporter and he’s so happy his name is on the bell.”Wooden handle attached to a brass bell."Dear Pa, may you always ring true blue, Love Harry"
