Johannes Oskar "Hans" Muhlhaus (centre front wearing dark shirt) with Raimond Kaufmann (front right wearing shorts) worked with Hans in England. Between them are Paul Wieting and/or Georg Erler. The man partly hidden between the rows is Walter Kiessling. Hans, an engineer, had been working in England since 1929, setting up and later managing a Manchester office of Siemens Schuckert GmbH which dealt with mining equipment. He later moved to Sheffield and in 1937 he met Nora, who he married in 1937. After the fall of France he and other people of German, Austrian and Italian origin were gathered up and interned in camps in Britain. On 2 July 1940 Hans was among 1200 German and Italian internees aboard the Arandora Star when it was torpedoed by German U Boat U-47; over 800 died in this incident which happened off the Irish coast. On 10 July he was sent to Australia aboard the Dunera, along with over 2500 internees. The voyage on the overcrowded ship was uncomfortable and difficult. Men who travelled on this ship became known as the Dunera Boys. During his period of internment in Tatura he taught English and engineering and kept up to date with mining engineering through books supplied by the Red Cross. Hans returned to Sheffield after the war but was not able to return to his previous job. He found employment at an engineering firm in Cornwall and stayed there until retirement. This collection of glasses and cases was donated by Miss Connie Cruickshank. She was part of the family of Orbost's first doctor, Dr James Kerr. As the 19th Century came to a close, more and more people wore their eyeglasses everyday. A popular style of inexpensive, everyday spectacles was the pince-nez. French for "pinch nose," the pince-nez was first developed in France circa 1840 and began to be imported after the 1850s. Pince-nez have no temples, but are fit snugly on the bridge of the nose. Pince- nez could be uncomfortable to wear and broke often from falling off the nose. These items demonstrate how glasses' styles have changed over time. One pair of pince-nez glasses and its brown leather case shaped to fit. One solid black wooden case with a small hinged door at one end. It is a biography composed of a series of translations; except for the earliest years, which Luther could not narrate himself, the translator rarely needed to speak in his own voice. The English subject edition is Michelet's French compilation that was first published in Paris in 1835 as Mémoires de Luther, écrits par lui-même and rendered into English by William Hazlitt (1811–1893). The work traces Luther from his peasant origins and monastic life through his ordination, his journey to Rome, his "temptations" and inner spiritual crises, his break with the papacy, his marriage to the escaped nun Katharina von Bora, and his role at the centre of the Reformation, largely in his own recorded voice, framed by Michelet.
