The item is an end panel from the box section of a "SUN' Seed & Fertilizer Drill. It was manufactured by H.V. McKay Pty. Ltd. at their agricultural machinery manufacturing plant in Sunshine Victoria. The date of manufacture is estimated to be somewhere between 1921 and 1930 because of the imprint H.V. McKay Pty. Ltd. According to the Museum Metadata Exchange (http://museumex.org/oai/mv/2749) the Sunshine Harvester Works was reformed as H.V. McKay Pty. Ltd. in 1921 and in 1930 it became H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty. Ltd after a merger with the Canadian farm machinery manufacturer Massey Harris. The two events in 1921 and in 1930 are also confirmed by Churchward, M. (2006) at (http://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/articles/2010).This early 20th century item is a relic of the agricultural machinery manufacturing past of Sunshine Victoria. The company started by H. V. McKay no longer exists and neither do the subsequent manufacturing companies H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty. Ltd., and the later Massey Ferguson (Aust.) Limited. Bishop, Coach Builders; Straughair Duncan, Engineers, Blacksmiths & Farriers; Straughair Duncan, Beechworth Foundry; Wholesale & Retail Est. 1855, Mackenzie Family Store ; and T. Pratten, Grocer. The Mental Hospital can be seen in the background. Mark Straughair and John Duncan, established the Beechworth Foundry, Newtown in 1858 and went on to build an important industry, employing around sixteen men, after acquiring Alexander Roger's New Ford Street Foundry in the late 1860s. Making and repairing mostly mining and agricultural machinery for the Ovens District and a Beechworth brewery, the business continued to function after Straughair's death in 1882, up until the death of Duncan in 1896, when the business folded. This folding ruler is a promotional item produced by the H.V. McKay Sunshine Harvester Works, Australia’s leading agricultural machinery manufacturer in the early 20th century. The ruler advertises the company’s global success, particularly their major export of harvesters to large-scale farms in South America. Such rulers were distributed to farmers, machinery agents, and agricultural shows as a practical advertising tool and are now collectible items representing Australia’s industrial and rural heritage. The ruler was used in a farm in Natimuk. The decorated side served as advertising for the McKay harvesting machines used in large farms in La Pampa, a fertile agricultural land in Argentina. In Australian Dictionary of Biography: "'Sunshine' harvesters were dispatched to South Africa, and in 1901 Sam and three Ballarat experts went to the Argentine where they demonstrated 'La Australiana' on a variety of crops so effectively that they soon threatened the trade in North American reaper-binders and headers."A folding wooden ruler, measuring one foot (12 inches) in length when fully extended. The ruler is hinged at the centre and printed with both imperial measurements and advertising text and images on the reverse. One side is marked with inch measurements and the branding "H.V. McKay Sunshine Harvester Works". The reverse features printed promotional material: "H.V. McKay’s 'Sunshine' Harvesters harvest the grain on the largest wheat farm in the world." It refers to a wheat farm in Argentina, operated by the Compañía Bunge y Born, where fifty Sunshine harvesters were used to farm over 100,000 acres. A small photograph on the back shows the row of Sunshine harvesters at work. This is a very common 'farm' style of old swinglebar. Blacksmiths and agricultural machinery suppliers made them by the thousands. They were used most commonly on heavy vehicles pulled by horses. This one would have been used on a farming property on the Orbost district.This item is an example of an early farming implement used in the Orbost district. It also demonstrates the improvisation skills of the agricultural community.Four pieces of wood connected by iron fittings. Two pieces have iron loops at both ends. The two straight pieces appear to be newer. There are two swingle trees. Seed broadcaster were used to distribute seed across a small area or to fill in patches where seeding has been missed. This method does not ensure a uniform distribution of seeds unless the person using the machine walks at a very measured pace. It also requires a lot of time and manual labour if used in larger areas. It was most used for planting cover crops, grains, grasses and similar plants that do not need to be in neat rows. The hand-crank broadcast seed spreader was invented in 1868 by Samuel S. Speicher (aka. Spyker) in Indiana, USA. By 1955 new developments included the invention of a seed broadcaster on wheels and these smaller spreaders started to disappear.This item is representative of agricultural machinery used on a local, national and international level in the late 19th and early 20th century.A metal hand seed broadcaster. A hopper at the top was the receptacle for seed. The wheel with a handle on the side when turned drives the cogs attached to an axle. This action rotates the attached spindle with blades to propel seed out the front of the broadcaster. The broadcaster would have had a shoulder strap and a bag of seed would have been added to the hopper and secured with twine through the holes around the top.agricultural tools, farm machinery

This calendar has been distributed as a advertising item for Earl’s agricultural machinery and oil depot. The business was situated at the corner of Lava and Kepler Streets in Warrnambool. The name, Acmino’ stood for Allis-Chalmers, Mitchell’s Implements, Neptune Oils’. Distributing calendars at Christmas time for the following year was, and still is, a popular advertising tool for businesses. This calendar is of minor interest as an example of the use made by businesses in the 1940s of calendars as advertising tools. It also has a local Warrnambool connection, the agricultural machinery business of F. Earl. This is a 1946 calendar with a buff-coloured sheet of crinkled paper with a brown border. It has a coloured photograph of two men droving cattle near a river and it ispasted on to the paper with a brown border around the photograph. The calendar for 1946 is printed on to the paper and also in monthly sheets pasted on to the paper on top of each other. The printing on the calendar is brown. On the back of the calendar is written in black ink, ‘French Bros’. The calendar has a red piece of string at the top for hanging the calendar up on a wall or cupboard. This pump appears to be an antique hand-operated suction pump, possibly used for extracting liquids such as oil, water, or grease. It may have been used in mechanical applications, agricultural machinery maintenance, or even domestic tasks such as transferring kerosene or lubricants. These types of pumps were commonly used in the early to mid-20th century before the advent of electric pumps.The object is a cylindrical metal hand pump with a wooden handle at one end and a threaded nozzle or cap at the opposite end. The wooden handle is turned and slightly tapered, featuring decorative rings near its base. The metal cylinder is long and tubular, segmented with slight ridges, indicating where it may have been assembled or reinforced. Bruce & McClure were manufacturers of windmills and agricultural machinery including motor engines , pumps, tanks,and appliances for supplying and conserving water.Also included was brass,iron and steel foundry works. They won 11 first prizes at the Grand national Show of 1907 and in 1914 designed and manufactured a new water boring machine which could also be used for oil and gold exploration They operated from Lava Street well into the 1940's as well as from the geelong area. This plaque is possibly from one of their machines.A tangible link to one of Warrnambool's manufacturing businesses which was innovative and an essential part of the beginnings of machine use in farms and industry in the district.
