They were fashionable dressers of beds, givers of warmth, bestowers of security and reliability. The comfort found in these objects resonates with almost all of us; we grew up with them ourselves or fondly recall them in a grandparent’s home. There is no modern replacement with the integrity of these old blankets, many of them now older than most of us. They are romantic, sensible, special, familiar, nostalgic and nothing else feels so appropriate in so many situations. No offense to the great Aussie doona, but from hippie to hipster, at a music festival, picnic, campsite or couch, a vintage blanket is something coveted by all. This industry that employed tens of thousands and must have been such a huge contributor to the economy is almost completely lost now. The house was built in 1913 for Mr James Rubira and named for his wife Emilia Tajouera Guidotti, an Italian opera singer. She was born in 1865 and died in Surrey Hills on 21 October 1950. James was born in 1863 in Allela, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and died on 8 November 1935 in Surrey Hills. They married in Victoria in 1892. They married in 1892. James's mother was a member of the Parer family. The Rubiras and the Parers were among a number of Spanish families who began to migrate to Australia in the 1860s. James' mother was Teresa Florentina Lluisa Parer. Many of the families settled in Box Hill and then Surrey Hills by the 1900s. Margaret Picken (1950-) trained and worked as a cartographic draftsman from 1968-1975 within the mining industry. These skills were readily transferable to work as a property illustrator for the real estate industry. Process: “Sketches were ordered by phone initially as there were no mobile phones or computers then. I would take our 2 year-old son with me to the houses when the other 2 boys were at school. I photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a ‘thumbnail’ sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the ‘pen and ink’ was completed. This process was the only one I used the entire time. Polaroid photos gave an instant usable photo. I then delivered the sketches by hand to the offices. There were deadlines each week on a Tuesday.” “… about 2003 coloured photos began to take over the sketches and mainstream companies replaced sole traders like myself providing a one-stop shop for all advertising. I produced my last Real Estate sketches in late 2005.” Margaret Picken (1950-) trained and worked as a cartographic draftsman from 1968-1975 within the mining industry. This architectural drawing is one of a series created by Margaret Picken for a range of real estate agents in Melbourne between 1983 and 2005. Each work is signed and dated. Margaret Picken approached a number of historical societies in July 2020 with a view to donating her work. Sketches for post code 3127 arefheld by this collection. Others for suburbs including Ashburton, Balwyn, Camberwell, Canterbury, Blackburn, Box Hill, Burwood, Glen Iris, Hawthorn, Kew, Mont Albert North and Nunawading have been donated to the relevant historical group in those suburbs. The house was built in 1927. It was the home of Mrs Fanny Harcourt (nee Horsfield), 1874-1949, who was the mother of Muriel Joy Harcourt. She married Alfred Leonard Gordon Noack in 1942. It later became their home. Alfred was a teacher and came to Surrey Hills from Echuca. Alfred Noack took a number of photos of the Surrey Hills area which he donated to the collection. Fanny Adelaide Harcourt Horsfield died in 1949 in Echuca. OBITUARY - MRS. F. A. HARCOURT-HORSFIELD The late Fanny Adelaide Harcourt-Horsfield, who passed away at her daughter's Mrs A. Noack's residence on July 26, was a member of the well-known Smythe family of Ballina, N.S.Wales, and the wife of the late Joseph Victor Harcourt-Horsfield executive member of the Nestle Anglo-Swiss Milk Coy. Deceased had been an invalid for some 15 years, but in spite of her disabilities was always of a bright and cheerful disposition, which endeared her to her many friends. Her remains were interred privately in the family grave at Heidelberg. The Rev. H. W. R. Norwood officiated at the graveside. REF: Trove - The Riverina Herald, 28 July 1949. 1st Surrey Hills Boy Scout Troop was formed in 1909 by Theodore Hendy, two years after Lord Robert Baden-Powell had started the Movement. Hendy (left back) sent Baden-Powell greetings advising he was sending a photo of his troop. This could be the photograph. Taken in the grounds of his home "Kookaburra" (demolished) in Albany Crescent, Surrey Hills (later given the number 44). The Royal Hotel on the corner of Canterbury Road and Broughton Road can be seen on the right. The photograph was taken by M. Hill, uncle of Mr W. Dempsey. 'Kookaburra' was the home of Theodore Hendy's uncle Archibald Noete Hendy, an estate agent. Earlier it was known as 'Glastonbury'. In c1938 the house was demolished and the land divided into 4 lots. Archibald Hendy and his wife Bertha Bowen (nee Rohs) later resided at 'Barehin' in Pembroke Street.
