The SZD-30 Pirat was designed by Jerzy Smielkiewicz and first flew in 1966. Over 700 have been produced. The example registered as VH-GYN which was donated to the Australian Gliding Museum by Alan McMaster is one of two that have come to Australia. It carries serial number B-333 and was imported as a new aircraft which was test flown on 29 August 1970. During its logged flying life (last entry 15 April 1990) it was operated in the Northern Territory and Queensland and passed through a number of owners before Alan McMaster at Rockhampton; initially the Alice Springs Gliding Club and then individuals at Charleville and Yeronga in South Brisbane. The aircraft flew 1909 hours from 2073 launches. The log discloses numerous silver distance and duration achievements. The Museum's Pirat sailplane is an example of this popular Polish sailplane type and is indicative of the state of sailplane design in the 1960s.Single seat sailplane of mainly wood construction (some plastic elements) finished in white with green detailing. This is a personal account of Arthur Ernest Tonkin's experiences during World War 2. Arthur was a member of the 147 Australian General Transport Company. He enlisted in Alice Springs and spent the war as a driver along the route between Alice Springs and Darwin. There was no railway between Alice Springs and Darwin, and the road was more like a dirt track, but was essential for transportation of troops and supplies. This Morse key (known as a BUG was used from 1944 until April 1946 by R.A.A.F Cpl. William Robert Moffatt 147459 Wireless telegraphist. Used at 55 OBU Birdum and Gorrie Wireless telegraphy stations, and sent over 1.5 million weather forecast groups in 15 months. Then used at 57 OBU Alice Springs Airport until April 1946"I bought thie unit in Melbourne in 1944 while training at Point Cook RAAF Signal school as a wireless telegraphist. With my posting to 55OBU (operational base unit) at Birdum and Gorric Wireless telegraphy Stations broadcasting weather forecasts in morse code for the south west Pacific area, it was used continually, sending over a million and a half weather forecast groups over 15 months. It ended it's career with Aeradio service at Alice Springs airport, (57 QBU), when I was discharged in April 1946." At the age of 47 became a Home Missionary in the Methodist Church, serving at Lalbert, Birchip, Fitzroy and Alice Springs. On returning to Victoria he went to Poowong. He was ordained in 1967 at the age of 63, and went to Deloraine in Tasmania. On retiring, he and his wife moved to Berriwillock. He died at Sea Lake in 1981.B & W photograph of the Rev. Finalist Robert Klein-Boonschate in the ANLMAP 2003 Biography: (https://www.artpartners.com.au/robert-kleinboonschate/) Born in The Netherlands, Robert migrated to Tallangatta, Australia with his family in 1971. Robert completed a degree in Graphic Art at Swinburne College and settled into Melbourne for the next seven years as a professional artist and art facilitator. Robert moved to Mparntwe (Alice Springs) in the 1980’s where he worked closely with Arrernte Peoples for the next 12 years. Robert’s beautiful landscapes reflect the influence of Arrernte artist Albert Namatjira and his love of the Australian landscape reflects his experiences with the Arrernte Peoples and their connection to ‘Country’. Robert opened the art studio located at his home in Alice Springs to Arrernte, Luritja, Warlpiri & Pintupi artists and worked alongside such artists as Johnny Warrangkula Tjupurrula. Robert helped to facilitate Johnny’s later body of work by constructing special brushes which could be used by Johnny after breaking his wrist. Nyukana BAKER (1943-2016) Born Ernabella, South Australia Country: Kanypi Language: Pitjantjatjara A Pitjantjatjara artist from Ernabella who began painting, designing and weaving in 1963 and producing batik in 1971. Founded in 1949 Ernabella Arts is the longest running Aboriginal arts centre in Australia. It was established o create employment opportunities for young women from the local Pitjantjatjara people. Nyukana Baker died 17 April 2016 at Alice Springs, Northern Territory. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. In 1945 the Reverend Harry Griffiths, who worked for the Methodist Inland Mission in Alice Springs, saw the need for a boarding facility for children of families living in remote areas in Central Australia who needed access to schools. He and his wife established Griffiths House, on a site in the town centre, and for many years it became home for students from all over the Outback, including many young Aboriginal people. In the late 1950's the Rev Fred McKay, successor to the Rev John Flynn as Superintendent of the Australian Inland Mission, lobbied the United Church in the Northern Territory to build and expand on this important start. Together the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational churches embarked on a missionary venture to develop St Philip's College - a new, larger residential hostel which would one day become a full boarding school. An ideal site - 22 acres of bush at the junction of the Charles and Todd Rivers and backing on to the Telegraph Station National Park - was secured and after six years of planning, construction began in 1964. Fred McKay led the legendary work parties comprised of volunteers from all over Australia who travelled to Alice Springs, paying their own way and volunteering their expertise, time and labour, to turn a dream into a reality. This fantastic tradition continues today, with work parties arriving each mid-year holiday. On 13 February 1965 the first boarders moved in to St Philip's College. For the first 24 years, therefore, St Philip's College operated as a residential hostel only. The College’s ninth Headmaster, Mr Christopher Tudor, arrived in 1986. He and the Council Chairman, Mrs Jan Heaslip, judged that the time was right to complete the original plan to turn St Philip’s College into a fully fledged independent boarding/day school, serving not only “bush” families, but also the growing population of Alice Springs. The then College Council embraced the idea and three years of frantic, determined preparation and planning commenced, culminating in an extensive $2 million building program in 1988.
