This file contains 2 items: 1/A black, white and green brochure titled ‘Leash Free Parks and Reserves’ concerning leashing regulations, conditions for non-leashing, summaries of legislation and penalties for owners of dogs, written by the City of Glen Eira. It includes six illustrations and a map of Glen Eira which labels all leash free parks as well as a depiction of all the train stations in the area. 2/A collection of 37 black and white photographs which have all appeared in Caulfield Contact at some time. These include photographs of the ‘Caulfield Veterinary Clinic, North Road Ormond dated 1982, Animal Control officer Reg Dixon dated 1982, draught horses pulling a horse drawn cart dated 1988 and general animals. J.L.Smith was an early settler in East Brighton now Bentleigh and established successful Wood cutting, Grain & Chaff cutting and Motor garage businesses in Centre Road . He was elected Councillor of the Shire of Moorabbin and, with Mary Ann, his family were involved with local Church, Red Cross, and other community organizations. Herbert John Higgins ran a dairy farm with 40 cows on some acres fronting Jasper Rd ( Higgins Rd today ) he grew corn crops to feed his herd and also bought grain from J L Smith.Herbert Higgins , Dairy farmer, along with the Allnutt, and Long families were members of the Methodist Church Bentleigh from 1880s and involved in community organizations, J.L.Smith was an early settler in East Brighton now Bentleigh and established successful Wood cutting, Grain & Chaff cutting and Motor garage businesses in Centre Road . Nurse A. Watt was a registered Nurse who owned the Cheltenham Nursing Home, located up on the hill, at 200 Charman Road Cheltenham c1900. With Dr. Fleming Joyce, she brought many local identities into the world. Len Allnutt recalls that his brother, Ray, was born there in 1924. Nurse Watt had an excellent reputation for her care and ability in the local area. One recorded event was when in November 1910 Constable Edwards was shot by his son David, at his police house, after an episode of domestic violence involving Constable Edwards long suffering wife - the mother of David. Const. Edwards was first taken to the Police Station, but later taken by Shire ambulance to Nurse Watt's Cheltenham Nursing Home. At 8pm, Edwards was operated on by Dr. Joyce and Dr. Weigall. Despite the surgery, Edwards died the next day of haemorrhage and shock. David was convicted of manslaughter. Dr A Fleming Joyce was the Shire Medical Officer c1914 - 1930. Nurse Watt bequeathed her Estate to the Methodist Church. ( H. She also accommodated convalescent cases. Allnutt, in uniform, and on horseback, is leading the parade down Charman Road, from the Cheltenham Temperance Hall, where the parade commenced, to the Mentone Recreation Ground.A black and white photograph.
