Percy Richards taught Architecture and Building Construction at The Ballarat Art School - a division of Ballarat School of Mines from 1918-1921. He was responsible for the design of a number of buildings in the district. This item is the "Specification of work required to be done and materiaals required for construction of the new A.N.A. Building at the corner of Sturt, Albert and Lewis Streets, Ballarat. Prepared by and to the satisfaction of P.S. Richards, A.R.V.I.A. Architect and subject to the General Conditions of Contract." "BALLARAT CITY A.N.A. BALLARAT, Wednesday — The Ballarat City branch, A.N.A., which was formed nearly 50 years ago, ranks fourth on the association records, but several of the members were prominent in establishing the association in Melbourne a year or two earlier. On the past half-year's operations the total funds increased by £1558/18/3 to £29.389/11/11. The membership now totals 949. The committee recommended that as the property at the corner of Sturt and Albert Streets, which had been intended as the site of a new hall, had been sold, steps should he taken to remodel the present hall, and bring It up to date. The report was adopted." (The Herald, 18 June 1924)Fourteen detailed drawings showing the specifications for each section of the new A.N.A. building for Ballarat. A 24 page document submitted to the Public Health Department, Victoria, received 15 January 1918 and a 3 page document related to Reinforced Concrete Particulars. The Australian Natives Association (ANA) Benefit Society was formed in 1871 at a meeting of young men in Grimwood's Hotel, Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. The Association was one of many friendly societies that also aimed to promote the moral, social and intellectual advancement of its members. The young founders restricted membership to native-born Australians, but there were no Koories among them. The Australian Natives Association Ballarat Branch (No4) was founded in 1874. The association’s modest building was based in Camp Street and the branch was one of the most active in the colony, playing a key role in Federation. The Ballarat branch of the ANA was wound up in 1957 and the double storey building has since been used as for office space most recently for employment companies such as Tracey Recruitment. Ballarat's ANA Hall has heritage status under the City of Ballarat’s Camp Street heritage overlay HO186, however it is not listed by either the Victorian Heritage Register or the National Trust.Handwritten letter glued onto a lined page. The letter is from the Australian Natives Association Ballarat Branch No. 4, and is written to John Mateer at the time of his wife's death. The letter is signed by John Gray (President) and Fred Wainwright (secretary). Fred Wainwright was the first secretary of ANA branch No. 4. hew as a clerk at Ballarat Town Hall, and presented an essay on Federation of Australian Colonies in 1879.Australian Natives Association Ballaarat Branch No 4 14th December 1883. The Australian Natives' Association (ANA), a mutual society was founded in Melbourne, Australia in April 1871 as the Victorian Natives' Association. Ballarat branch (No 4) was founded in 1874, had a building in Camp Street and was one of the most active branches in the colony, playing a key role in Federation. The medallist, K.G. Luke, was a private mint that made 1956 Olympic Games medals for the Numismatic Association of Victoria, as well as a considerable number of other medals and trophies. It operated at least between 1937 and 1974. A gold coloured medal featured an a white enameled Australia with the words A.N.A. Alexander Peacock was born in Creswick, Victoria in 1861. Upon leaving school he mined and was legal manager of mining companies in Ballarat. In 1882 he joined the Creswick branch of the Australian Natives' Association (ANA) and became branch secretary. He stood for parlimnet in March 189 and was elected to the Legislative Assembly representing Clunes and Allandale. Peacock assisted in the establishment f the Clunes Branch of the Ballarat School of MInes which opened in 1890. He was one of the Victorian delegates to teh Federal Convention in 1897. He laid the foundation stone of the new SMB Classroom building in 1899 while MInister for Public Instruction. The photo is a Panorama showing Sturt Street, taken from the Town Hall, looking north east with Mount Warrenheip and Black Hill in the view. Shows the buildings east of Lydiard St, including Bridge St, Camp St and part of Victoria St. One tram is westbound, about to cross Lydiard St. Rose Series P4500. Has signs for the "Mail Echo", Plume petrol, ANA, the Mechanics Institute, and Longhurs Bread. On the rear Wal Jack has written extensive notes for Ken Magor noting the streets in the view and the Ballarat East loco depot and Goods shed. 1889 BALLARAT SCHOOL OF MINES ENJOYED HIGH STATUS IN AUSTRALIA AND OVERSEAS. SEVERAL SMB STUDENTS WERE RESIDENTS OF CLUNES. SCHOOLS OF MINES HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED AT SEVERAL OTHER DISTRICT CENTRES INCLUDING MARYBOROUGH AND CRESWICK, OTHERS WERE TO FOLLOW AT ARARAT, STAWELL AND DAYLESFORD 1890 CLUNES BOROUGH COUNCIL WITH MR JOSEPH BRYANT LEADING, APPROACHED THE BALLARAT SCHOOL OF MINES REQUESTING SUPPORT FOR A BRANCH SCHOOL AT CLUNES OFFERING ELEMENTARY CLASSES WITH SMB STAFF AS LECTURERS SMB COUNCIL AGREED TO STAFF THE SUGGESTED CLASSES. SEVERAL PUBLIC LECTURES WERE ARRANGED AT CLUNES TO HELP CREATE INTEREST IN THE NEW CLUNES BRANCH OF SMB. CLASSES SOMMENCED SOME AT THE CLUNES FREE LIBRARY AND SOME AT THE NEW NORTH CLUNES MINE OFFICE/LABORATORY PER FAVOUR OF JOSEPH BRYANT WHO WAS HONORARY DIRECTOR OF THE BRANCH SCHOOL. 1891 LOWER STUDENT NUMBERS CAUSING CONCERN..
