Around the edge is printed- Unitas Benevolentia et Concordia.('Unity, Benevolence & Concord', sometimes given in Latin as 'Unitas, Benevolentia, Concordia'.) The circle is divided into four with shaking hands in the top left, three deer in the top right, an angle and horn is the bottom left and a quiver and arrows on the right. The letter is headed Court Unity No. 3200 Ballarat 17 May 1873. It is addressed to Mr Thomas Thomas, c/o Mrs J. Jilbert, Long Gully, Sandhurst. Letter refers to leaving one district and moving to another and the payment of contributions. Signed ? Anderson, Secy. Many of the entries are prefaced by Bro and a loose slip of paper in the ledger has The Ancient Order of Foresters, Warrnambool United District. The United Warrnambool District of the Ancient Order of Foresters was formed around 1869. It was changed to the Court Warrnambool No. 4126 at a later date. The Ancient order of Foresters was established in Leeds in England in the mid 1700’s to provide financial and support to its members in times of illness, unemployment, disability and old age. They were particularly active in the lives of members around the time of both world wars and during the depression in the 1930’s. The entries in this journal contain the names of many early people of the area as well as detailed financial records of an early friendly society. It has historical significance and social significance for the district. No 3770 Collection Ancient Order of Forresters Friendly Society ...Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society Member's Clearance printed on cream heavy paper with light tan pattern with Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society Members Clearance printed on it. There is an emblem at the top of the paper, it has a circular wreath of ribbon and flowers. On the left is a bunch of flowers, a musical instrument on the right and in the centre of the wreath is a boy kneeling and rolling a bundle of tied up stems. The paper is from Court Queen of the West No. 3707 of the Devon & Cornwall District held at the Odd Fellows & Forester's Hall, Penzance in the County of Cornwall. The clearance states that Brother James Hall a single man, now aged 29 years, by trade a Coachman was admitted a Member of the above Court, on the Sixth day of July 1869 and has paid all Dues and Demands up to the 27th day of June 1876. It authorizes any Court to accept the Said Brother as a Clearance Member subject to the conditions. Signed by William W. Richards - Chief Ranger, John A Lames - Sub Chief Ranger, and Charles H. Uren - Secretary. Has a red seal in the bottom left corner. Letter from Robert Coulthard, dated 24 Dec 1877. He enclosed a Post Office Order for 13/-, the amount of his last quarters subscription due on the 27 inst. He also wanted to know if he could get into the Lodge at Emerald Hill as it was unlikely that he would live on Sandhurst again. He asked for a reply.
