This is The Carved Cupboard by Amy Le Feuvre, the 1899 serialised story featured as "This Year's Story" in a copy of Our Own Gazette, Vol. 16. The cover credits it to "the Author of Probable Sons", which was also one of Le Feuvre's books. The story centres around four sisters who live in a house whose owner has left an old carved cupboard locked, asking the tenants not to open it. Before she leaves, their nanny gives each sister a verse from Psalm 37 to meditate on. As the secret of the cupboard unfolds, each sister grows spiritually according to her verse. The sisters (Agatha, Clare, Gwen, and Elfie) are pushed out of their home when a cousin convinces their aunt to change her will.
