As luck would have it she chance on the matron of the matron of a nursing home at Lindisfare who spoke to her father, allowing her to go there to help out. She then move to Campbell Town Hospitown Hospital for nurse trainin, then Sydney for a midwifery course. When war broke out she enlisted and was posted to the Middle Eat in 1942. 1945 saw her at the army hospital in Bougainville, where she met a sick fellow Tasmanian, Raymond Burke of the 2/27th. Ray soon returned to the fighting but when the war was over he returned to Bougainville and they were married..
