Depicted in the photograph is Newtown Bridge or the Newtown Falls Bridge, in Beechworth, Victoria. Noted for its location, detailed craftsmanship and stonemasonry by Scottish stonemasons the Newtown Bridge was built in the 19th century provincial town of Beechworth (completed in 1875). The bridge was built over Spring Creek, spanning 6.3 meters wide and 24.8 meters tall. Beechworth held a distinct role in the administrative and commercial management of Victoria's north-eastern goldfields, with many objects and structures still well preserved from the towns establishment. The bridge indicates the growth of the town, replacing a previous timber structure as well as its association to the mining activity in the area and the rapid increase in Australia's economy that led to investment and development of roads and railways. The local granite used in the construction of the single arch Newtown Bridge makes the bridge and other buildings made with the granite unique to the area, the honey-toned material distinct to Beechworth. This photograph is historically significant as it provides insight into the industrial development of Beechworth and the surrounding area, contributed to by the goldfields. This arch was built as a ceremonial arch. Plaque citation on the arch reads " Erected in 1884 by James Mackintosh, owner of local sawmill, for the visit of the Governor Sir H B Loch. This is the only known example in Victoria of a 19th century ceremonial arch, a type usually intended to be temporary.This arch is on the Historical Buildings register no.1092. It is the only known example of a temporary ceremonial arch still in existence in Victoria. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. The Crossways historic inn survived the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires thanks to the efforts of its c-owner Greg Cherry and, in the days after the fires, provided a much-needed refuge to the Marysville community and firefighters. When the local Wycheproof Masonic Lodge closed the Honour Roll was hung in the Wycheproof Court House. The window in the photograph is of the 1928 stained glass window and the baptism fold in the St Nicholas' Seamen's Chapel at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, which were installed at Flagstaff Hill's for the Chapel's opening in 1981. About the Window - The window in this photograph, once known as the Dr Connell Memorial Window, was a feature of an external wall adjacent to the Women’s and Children’s Wards of Warrnambool Hospital. Honorary Doctors had played a significant role in the operation of the hospital between the years 1900 to 1939. One of these doctors was Dr. Connell, who passed away in 1928. The green glass memorial nameplate has an inscription that dedicates the window to Dr. Connell. The inscription reads: "A tribute to Egbert John Connell M.B.B.S. who for 30 years rendered devoted and valuable service to this institution. Obiit April 4th 1928, A.D." The photograph's significance lies in the subject of the stained glass window, and its connection with the history of the local Warrnambool Base Hospital, dating to Dr Connell's work there in the early 20th century.This photograph captures the light shining through an arched, stained glass window behind a baptismal font.
