Commonwealth Federation Memorial unveiled 1903 corner of Lower Main St and Barnes Street Stawell. The memorial commemorates the Federation of the Australian States into the Commonwealth of Australia on the 1st January 1901. The memorial cost 100 pounds and has a foundation supporting 4 columns of Scottish rose granite. The base & caps of these columns are of black marble. Around the tops of the columns are the names of the six States. George Robson and George Gray, Stawell's monumental masons who carried out the work were also thought to be responsible for the design. Reginald Charles ALLARDICE enlisted first in the CMF on 10.8.1940 age 21 years Regt No V40236. During this time he applied to join the RAAF so was discharged from the Army on 21.5.1942 as a Pte in the 24/39th Bn. Two days later he is in the RAAF as a Trainee Aircrew WEF No 418577. On 31.12.1942 he is listed as a LAC (Leading Aircraftsman. Ongoing training sees him at Benalla, Mallala in SA, Mt Gambier, Pt Cook, Camp Miles Standish USA. Finally he is stationed in England at Pembroke with 461 Sqd RAAF with the rank of Sgt on 10.10.1943. This was a Sunderland Sqd which was a large long range patrol Flying Boat. The unit was mainly Australians from many nations. He rises through the ranks to T/F/Sgt, Officer, Pilot Officer, Flying Officer and last Flight Lieutenant on 10.3.1945. He is discharged from the RAAF on 7.12.1945 at RAF Station Beecles Suffolk England. 461 Sqd was a Coastal Command unit mostly involved in submarine detection and hunting in the Atlantic and Bay of Biscay. They were involved in the D Day landings. The Sqd lost 20 aircraft to enemy action and accidents. Donated by the widow about 2005. Has borrowed them back at times for display in her retirement village. 1 - "Spencer Street looking south from the roof of Hamill tyre service, tramcar held up in northbound traffic for a period of 3.5 minutes, date 28.9.54, time 0835 hrs. In the background is part of the Fish market building, the bridge itself carrying very heavy traffic. In the foreground is coming out of Siddeley Street, is an "Atlantic" petrol tanker and trucks for L & G Wilson carriers, and G H 'Don' Watson cattle truck. Note the truck carrying paper reels has come out of the Mobil Service Station and is turning south onto the bridge. Traffic is also struggling to exit Queens Wharf Road onto the bridge as well. The W2 class, is running to East Preston on Route 9 service. Note the Pioneer Tour coach, "CDR" petrol tanker and a forklift truck in the traffic mix. 2 - "Clarendon Street at Whiteman Street looking north (from tray of tramways truck), northbound trams held up by traffic across tracks, date 13-10-54, time 0810hrs". In the view is W5 class No. 808, running a Thornbury route 9B service. Another "Thornbury" bound tram can be glimpsed in the traffic ahead.
