The Sunshine and District Historical Society Pioneers’ Lunch / Dinner is an annual event. It’s a commemorative gathering that honours the early settlers, people, community leaders of Sunshine and the surrounding district, events, achievements, etc. At the Pioneers’ Lunch / Dinner, a toast is a ritual and a dedicated moment to honour the original settlers and their contributions, and a guest speaker talks about an interesting subject. Tom Rigg has written a book "Sunshine Railway Disaster 1908" detailing all the events before, during and after the accident. John "Jack" Horace Jackson, was a local amateur movie who had his own picture theatre "Gladina" at his Withers Street home. The Spalding factory opened in 1925 and was located at the intersection of Ballarat Rd and McIntyre Rd in Sunshine. The factory made sporting goods and in 1972 Spalding acquired T.W. Sherrin Pty Ltd a major manufacturer of footballs used in Australian Rules football. On the 7th July 1913, the Sunshine Technical School opened as a wooden administration building with six classrooms and a large, galvanised iron workshop for the trade apprentices. Over the next few years, the school expanded its subjects to teaching commercial and science subjects. In 1915 the school was opened for girls to attend to learn shorthand and typewriting. To separate the boys from the girls the science lab was partitioned off. By 1992 and with amalgamation and restructure of six schools, the Sunshine Technical School was renamed as the Sunshine College and operated four campuses, three junior campuses for years 7-10 in Ardeer, North Sunshine and West Sunshine and the senior campus in Graham St caters for Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) for years 11 & 12. The College also runs the Harvester Technical College in North Sunshine (opened 2014) which brings the purpose of the school a full circle back to H.V. McKay's original vision of a technical school. in 2020 the site was closed, and the students were relocated to the College's Lachlan Road (former Sunshine West High) and Northumberland Road (former Sunshine North Technical) campuses.Audio tape This audio tape has been digitised.
